In the part of the world I live at computer inspections walk into companies and check all computers on premises. Mine has licensed windows 7 and office, but the rest of the stuff on it is not licensed. I have like 50 grand of unlicensed crap on it. I wouldn't get in trouble for it as far as jail or bail is concerned, that's my bosses worry. But they would confiscate my beloved laptop.

I have this idea. Create a second windows installation, let's say I put corp windows on it, open office, and make it look like it's being used on regular basis. In this fake windows installation everything is licensed, and it shows fake drive sizes in explorer and hides real partitions. Then on my real windows I would have a script which modifies boot.ini by replacing it, and reboots computer, so that when it boots up next time it boots to fake windows installation and nowhere else. I could also EFS my real windows installation.

My question is if there is an easier way to do this?

or more precisely

How to properly do what I want?

Few notes, idiots that come to check aren't educated enough and only look in installed programs and program files.
I'm thinking against doing a fake partition with linux because it could look suspicious and I don't know linux well enough.

Another thing, where could I find open minded forums about this where nerds wouldn't jump on me and tell me to buy software if I use it and enjoy it. F***k those virgins who think like that, I want to use and enjoy my software without paying for the right to use it.

TrueCrypt is easy, lets you make a hidden OS and a fake OS setup in a non-hidden container. It only works on a Windows-only setup though, IIRC. It doesn't just fool idiots though, it also provides plausible deniability and can fool the lower grade software used by governments.

P.S. I use GNU/Linux, believe in Free Software and I am still 100% in favour of so-called "piracy" ;)

I really appreciate your idea . . . :)
Hope that works well.

If your laptop has ESATA or USB 3.0 you can buy an external drive and put your software on that inside a VirtualPC/VMWare/VirtualBox image and run it off your laptop. Portable so you can use it anywhere provided you have a player application like VMWare player. It allows you to use existing disk images but you can only create new ones with the full suite.

I wouldn't recommend anything slower than USB 3.0 or ESATA.

If you currently have too many women chasing you, calling you, harassing you, knocking on your door at 2 o'clock in the morning... then I have the simple solution for you.

Just read my free ebook 22 Rules for Massive Success With Women and do the opposite of what I recommend.

This will quickly drive all women away from you.

And you will be able to relax and to live your life in peace and quiet.

Make a virtual machine where you put Windows and the legal stuff.
When they come to check, run it and maximize it.

Make sure the hidden menus of the machine are completely hidden, rebind the default shortcuts of the VM's, assign believable properties to the emulated hardware.

It'd be the best solution IF the ones who check are as unprepared as you say.

So instead you want to mess around with the file system, encryption programs and bootloaders.

I thought you wanted an easier option? Well a virtual machine is an easier option. It can also integrate into your desktop like this: http://blogs.msdn.com/blogfiles/jimoneil/WindowsLiveWriter/7on7XPMode_7EB/image_8.png

No little window container for the virtual machine anymore. That's XP mode/VirtualPC running on top of Windows 7 you can also use VirtualBox which has GPU acceleration if you need that. Works good for everything but heavy gaming.

Being able to fix ur car is great. But knowing computers is much more useful. Everything nowadays is on computers. I think knowing this stuff is like knowing game, posseses same importance.

Good point. Even cars have advanced computers now. You can tune a car and diagnose problems with a laptop and a usb adapter hooked up to the car's ECU.
