Really? ;)

Sorry but I just find it hard to believe that women as a whole made some dramatic, radical change in the last twenty years.

Well believe it, but technically it started to snowball when men let women vote in 1917.
As for the poster who talked about males becoming androgenes as a result of 'feminism' this is false... androgynous men have existed in every developed civilization since the dawn of time. Male Egyptian royalty wore makeup, and we all remember the powdered wigs worn by English aristocracy. Ironically, such feminine practices were actually done to display power and wealth... what a difference a day makes.
I hardly think using Ancient Egyptians fascination with makeup is comparable to the appalling gender role reversal we have today, and I even doubt the thought of them looking "androgenes" even entered peoples minds.

You guys are totally paranoid. Society is changing, that's true, but it's not going downhill. People just get insecure when society changes.

Think back to the times when society changed:

-The end of the medieval era
-The downfall of the nobility, and the rise of the middle classes
-When women/blacks got the right to vote
-The end of imperialism and world conquest

As society changes, you can either:

a) Whine like a little b1tch
b) Adapt and thrive

From what I've seen, there's something funny going on in GenY. I can't put my finger on it...

Is it technology which is helping people communicate more?
Is it parents who spoil the 5hit out of their kids?
Is it all money-driven?
Is it single parent families?
Is it the influence of GenY's icons (Britney spears, 50 cent, etc?)

b) Adapt and thrive
That's about all you can do... at least as one person. It's only when you get a group of people together that you can have an influence on society (ie feminism).

Every guy who is aged around 16-22 has the unique perspective of both GenX and GenY. We were born before the Internet and the mobile phone, but we were young enough to learn to use them.

I think the defining point of GenY is technology. More specifically, communications technology. We can talk to people in Honduras at very low cost (a few cents internet connection). This is why the concept of "online communities" (ie. this DJ forum) has become so popular amongst younger people.

The most important thing I'm watching out for is social life. Will GenY become isolated behind their computers, with a social life consisting of online gaming and online forums? Or will GenY rebel against technology and start going outside their house?

I must be the only guy in the world who disagrees...

Marketing has always been a part of society since "society" was formed. The kings of medieval Europe "marketed" their claim to power, the conquistadors of the Renaissance "marketed" their newfound land, and in a twist of irony, the communist politicians of the early 20th century "marketed" the merits of communism.

The 'product' has changed from imperial bloodlines and communism to clothing and music CDs, but the intentions are still the same.

I will agree that technology is causing people to stay inside more. When TV came along, children went outside when there was nothing good on. When video games came along, children went outside when they were bored of the games they have. Can one say "I'm bored, and there's nothing good on the internet"?

Sesame Street recently made a change to Cookie Monster. Instead of "C is for Cookie", he says "Cookies are a sometimes food". This was done to fight obesity in children.

Cookies and junk food aren't necessarily the cause of child obesity. I ate tons of that 5hit when I was young. I'd just go outside and burn off all my energy. I remained a skinny little 5hit. I'm guessing it's lack of exercise. Too much to do inside.

I also wouldn't agree that it's marketing. Check out http://www.badfads.com

What I do notice, and I wrote a separate post about it, that industries have the power to tell people what's in and what's out. Dressing all women like Britney and Christina , including girls 10 years and younger is the "in thing" right now. Stores are filled with low rise jeans for all ages. Therefore, your 8 year old daughter's ass crack is going to stick out when she bends over. Might be nice for pedophiles, but socially, it's disgusting and quite embarassing for the child. And don't get me started on thongs for kids which do exist.

You essentially upped your VALUE in her eyes by showing her that, if she wants you, she has to at times do things that you like to do. You are SOMETHING after all. You are NOT FREE. If she wants to hang with you, it's going to cost her something — time, effort, money.
