This is a nation in which 85% of its citizens identify as Catholics. Thousands of Irish citizens currently living abroad even traveled home for this vote.
Based on reading Ive done, 30 years ago the Catholic church had a solid grip of power on the nation. Divorce was illegal, contraception was illegal, abortion was illegal, and being gay was illegal. Seems that after sex scandals rocked the Catholic church in Ireland, they lost their influence. Hypocrites do tend to lose the people they lead.
Anyways, divorce, gay relationships, and contraception were decriminalized over the years. Now polls are suggesting a large lead for the Yes vote on gay marriage. I would expect abortion will likely be on the voting block over the next decade.
