Hey /b/, I'll tell you what happened to me last night.
I know this girl who I've liked for a very long time. No, I'm in love with her. We've been friends this whole while and last week, she was very depressed. I told her, "Let's go to a movie, I'll make it fun for you. We'll make it a date." She said yes and even added that she'd love to go out with me!!!
I was over the metaphorical ****ing moon.
So on the day, yesterday, I went to the cinema early and bought the tickets. I got the seats I wanted - 3rd row from back, middle two. Still a few hours to go for the movie.
She shows up and she looks really pretty, even better than she usually does. We decided to grab something to eat before the movie started and the whole time, I'm making jokes and she's laughing her head off. I was pleased with myself because she was enjoying my company.
The time comes and we start walking across the mall to the cinema. As we're walking, I hear her say "Jake!". This confused me a bit. My name isn't Jake. I wondered why she said that...
Turns out, she was looking at a tall guy, definitely handsome and he was standing a bit further ahead.
Emily flipped (oh, her name's Emily) out when she saw him. It looked like some sort of a short circuit or malfunction. She then explained - as it turned out, Jake over there is her ex boyfriend. Until a week ago. That's why she was so depressed. She was in a bit of a panic, like her feet were frozen or indecisive.
After a minute of this she says that she's going to go over there and have a quick talk with him and would I be so sweet and wait here? I said, movie's going to start soon and if he's the reason you're so upset you need to stay away from him. "Oh, it'll only be a quick word, promise." Kissed me. She kissed me, /b/, she ****ing KISSED ME, though it was a quick one, and quickly went over to Jake.
Right, so they're talking over there and I'm just standing around. As is customary in situations in which I am uncomfortable or embarrassed, I started playing with my phone. I glance up and I see she's suddenly very... animated. She seems angry and is scolding Jake, Jake is trying to be calm and to calm her down. This went on for a bit.
By this time, the movie has already started, or it's probably the adverts, but I hate being late for a movie. I hate being one of "those people" who block everyone else's view because I'm the late idiot. But for her I was willing to be that late idiot.
Then, I see Jake and Emily coming towards me. Uhm, squirm. Not a very comfortable position to be in. They come over and I see Emily looks... different. I wasn't liking this. She comes over and she's really sweet to me suddenly, she says, this is Jake, meet Jake, isn't he such a nice guy.
And in fact, while talking to Jake in the little snatches of conversation, he actually WAS a nice guy. Everyone's a nice guy these days, it seems. He just happened to be a tall, good looking nice guy.
She goes on, listen, hey, this is really important, I really need to talk to Jake, it's so important...
Uh...
She continues, hey, sorry I'm going to have to go with him, but hey, I'll make it up to you, but since our plans are canceled now, why don't you give Jake your ticket, I'm sure you wouldn't watch this movie alone and I'm sure it's not that good anyway, right?
Oh god.
So she kept trying to get me to give my ticket away even though I said I'd still see it alone. But she got a bit animated and kept pressing me to give it. So I did. I gave my ticket to Jake, and her face lit up and she was suddenly happy again. She put her arm around Jake's arm, they turned and walked off together and I hated myself. And I still loved her.
Why do we allow this to happen to us, /b/?
