Increasing punching power?

Hello. I recently used one of those arcade machines where you hit a target and your punch strength is measured. I sucked. Could barely go above 90 lbs no matter what I tried.

Then I see tall but skinny kids or fat guys hitting and they break 120 lbs easily.

I want to go from light weight to bonebreaker. Any tips?

"In boxing, a lot of power comes from a quick rotation of the abdominals, shoulders, and wrists with a pivot over a straight leg. Power is brought up from the base (legs) passing through the hips then the waist. A quick twist over the leg is followed by an extension of the arms. Useful exercises for developing power can include the bench press, clean and jerk, squat, calve raise, and bent leg dead lift."

Dave “Scooter” Honig

This is the best information u will receive on sosuave (probably anywhere on the internet) as to how to increase power. So listen up.

Good question is: "why do you need increased punch quality?"

What are you gonna achieve if you have it?

Raw power comes from a combination of factors, including speed, form (punching straight without any curve or angle), strength, and overall body motion.

Boxers put their whole body into a punch. Hip motion and using the legs as a spring of this power provides nearly all of the power, not the arm itself. The arm has to be able to take all of this impact tho (which is why a lot of people screw up their wrists).

Of course how you deliver the punch is important, but the most important thing is to follow through with your punch. That's the secret to breaking bricks and all that. You have to concentrate your energy into the punch don't allow your mind to stop the punch due to fear of your hand getting hurt. Of course after the punch is over it might hurt but that's part of delivering strong punches.

I follow boxing pretty closesly every chance I get and some of those boxers just have no idea what they're doing. Some punch like pussies, throwing their hands while their bodies stand still, it's awful. I can knock those ones out in no time. Now Tyson, that's another story. He definitely knows how to punch even though he hasn't got the best game/strategy. If he had more game he would never be beat but I guess no one's got the best of both worlds.

Big words. You could knock those boxers out in no time.............!!?? Have u ever boxed?? U could probably not even HIT those guys who LOOK crap to you. You cant always just throw your entire body into a punch, or you will be open to a counter punch. Punching power means nothing if you cant land the punch and u will be offbalance after you throw it.

As for Tyson, he punches VERY hard, that meant a heap when Lewis smacked him up like a bi*tch!! Tyson got his azz handed to him on a plate. He even said he got beat up like a bi*tch himself.

As for Tysons game/strategy.....?? hahahaa, WTF is that. He got smacked up cause he is old and one dimensional. Nothing to do with his game/strategy.....!! Man u obviously dont follow boxing too closely.

U want a man who has best of both worlds, Sugar Ray Robinson.

I'm right with my intuition 95% of the time. I'll knock them out. Just because they can dance doesn't mean they can fight.

Have u ever boxed??
Yes, I have.

U could probably not even HIT those guys who LOOK crap to you.
Probably is right. And probably I might as well hit them. Most of them have big heads anyway.

You cant always just throw your entire body into a punch, or you will be open to a counter punch.
I never said you should. I said that's how you deliver a power punch.

Punching power means nothing if you cant land the punch and u will be offbalance after you throw it.
Again, that's besides the point. That's why you got training so you can better your balance and be able to react best to the situation and hand and know when a power punch is the correct solution. If you're confident in your abilities, you might use only power punches and hit many of them.

As for Tyson, he punches VERY hard
In fact he does.

that meant a heap when Lewis smacked him up like a bi*tch!!
Lewis' got much more practice than Tyson before the fight. Lewis is not all that. He has some good strategy but his punches are lame.

Tyson got his azz handed to him on a plate. He even said he got beat up like a bi*tch himself.
I agree.

As for Tysons game/strategy.....?? hahahaa, WTF is that.
It's what I said it is, game/strategy; dictionary.com.

He got smacked up cause he is old and one dimensional.
Yes, he's old. If he was a bit younger, that punk Lewis would be on the floor. I doubt Lewis has ever fought a fight outside the ring.

Nothing to do with his game/strategy.....!!
What does one dimensional mean? It means he only uses power to punish his opponents. That means he doesn't use any strategy at all, and if he does, he does very little. Most of his stuff is true punch power.

In effect, you're contradicting yourself and obviously don't know what you're talking about. So stop and let the ones who do flame or whatever.

Man u obviously dont follow boxing too closely.
Maybe I don't, but a little more than you do.

U want a man who has best of both worlds, Sugar Ray Robinson.
I agree, he's a great boxer.

Thx for the replies guys, they are illuminating. I'll probably go into martial arts in the future but I'm trying to take my fitness to a higher level before I go in, or I might get shunted into the lightweights category where they work on technique but not power.

You guys are boxers right? Have you also learnt grappling and kicking? What about weapons?

I'm very into MMA. Do/did everything.
Much cooler to kick someone in the head than punch them!

Did weapons as well.

Yeah its satisfying as f$ck to kick someone in the head.

For the guy with the original question, you arent going to learn how to punch hard on this forum, and even if we can somehow put to words how a good punch works you wont be able to do it until youve practised it thousands of times, and after youve practised it thousands of times youll have to practise it another thousand times before the punch is automated in such a way that youll actually be able to use it in whatever situation you get into, be that a competition or "streetfight".

ok Firstly, Ebach, if you tell ANYONE in the boxing world Tyson has no "game/strategy" u will be laughed at!!

Secondly, dont give me that crap, u have NEVER boxed, it is quiet obvious.

Thirdly if you ever did, u would get wooped.

Fourthly, if you have boxed, amateur or pro?

Fifthly what is your name and what region are you from?

Sixthly, I will now find out if you are lying!!!

I heard somewhere that speed has a lot to do with it. And physics too since

force = mass x acceleration

You can make up for some loss in mass through speed. Just a thought, not sure if it makes sense or not.

I don't often reply to obtuse posts about people living in a fantasy world (hey some people are born 'special'), but on this occassion i'm offended.

Ebach, STFU. You obviously don't know what you're talking about and you're disrespecting my sport and fellow boxers.

And it's 'boxing' not 'fighting'.

At least something we agree on Clooney :D

Ebach - shut the fukk up. You never ever sparred with anybody. Had you taken 3 boxing lessons, you'd be aware that it takes years of training to achieve the level of those guys.

Glad there's controversy and not every ***** agreeing with the ***** standing next to them.

Secondly, dont give me that crap, u have NEVER boxed, it is quiet obvious.
Yes I have. Let's go for a round and say that again after we're done.

Thirdly if you ever did, u would get wooped.
How do you know? All you've seen so far is text on the internet. Way to judge newbie.

Fourthly, if you have boxed, amateur or pro?
Amateur.

Fifthly what is your name and what region are you from?
My name is none of your business and I'm in Chicago area.

Sixthly, I will now find out if you are lying!!!
Stop! Please, you're killing me. That sentence triggered an anxiety attack.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.
