Im thinking about getting a tattoo to commemorate the passing of my best friend. It would be in a non visible place, and it will be small initials. But i am questioning the reason i want a tattoo and is it necessary. What is the real reason that men get tattoos? Do we do it secretly to be cool or to feel rebellious? I mean, cant we just as easily remember what we hold dear to us on our heart and not our skin. Its crazy how popular/ ubiquitous tattoos have gotten in the past 10 yrs or so. Its not even unique anymore. IDK. Im kinda playing devils advocate here. What do yall think??

A badass, doesn't get tattoos. Everyone has tattoos, and it's a sign of following the herd.

exactly. Unless you're in prison and you BETTER at least look like a badass to survive, or if you're in a gang then I don't see the point anymore. You'd be shocked at the reactions I get from women when I tell them I don't have any tattoos or peircings. It's like I'm different" but in a good way. The tattoo fad has gotten out of hand. I don't judge people that have them, that's cool with me but you can't convince me that 80% of people that have them got them for social status only. Sorry, but I've never been a "follow the crowd" type of guy. I say what I think and I do what I want and I like what I like. Be your own man, not like thousands of other men.

Right on. I always avoided getting a tattoo growing up and these days I stand out for not having one. Ironic, huh?

My tattoo logic is this,

If it's something of significant personal importance, I'll never forget it, if it's something trivial, why put it on my body permanently? If the art is not good enough to put on my wall, why put it on my body? If it's good enough to put on my wall, why not do that instead?

Tattoos are attention whoring in my opinion. I say this as someone who works with several tattoo shops as a marketing guy. Even though you guys pay my bills, you'd never get me to get one. I don't see the point. Although on of my clients drew a piece that I would love to have framed on my wall. I'm trying to get him to redraw it and paint it on a canvas for me.

You essentially upped your VALUE in her eyes by showing her that, if she wants you, she has to at times do things that you like to do. You are SOMETHING after all. You are NOT FREE. If she wants to hang with you, it's going to cost her something — time, effort, money.

Same reason they skateboard, smoke, drive an Audi, or get a trophy gf: the fetish of conspicuous consumption. To prove they're "better" because they spent money.

That you would ever consider getting STUPID stamped on your head... (1) just proves you're stupid, and should get a tattoo, as a warning to smart people to not bother even talking to you.

That you would ever consider conspicuous consumption... (2) just proves you think you're better than everyone else and you're gonna show us all. (2) verifies (1). People with tattoos are somehow better anyway, right? A tattoo just makes perfect...a little more so.

Ready for (3)? You'll hear this good advice, understand the meaning of the words, check up on the quality of the advice... (3) then go do the stupid thing anyway. Those people who think they're so smart need me to smear sh1t all over the place so they have to look at it. That'll learn 'em.

Why even bother coming to a message board that talks about how women of any level of intelligence are ruled by emotions and can easily be manipulated ... if you just live your own life as a pointless string of emotional incidents?

F*ck that. I would drive an Audi simply because it's a fantastic car.

If I had the money and could justify the purchase, I would get a nice Audi TT RS with Quattro 4WD. It even has magnetic suspension.

Yeh thats solid logic. It makes you look at some of the people who are so called "alphas" with a ton of tattoo's as deep down attention seekers. Yeh i think ima pass on it. Thanks for the replies, i look at tattoos a little different now.

Lets not get into an insult/tough guy contest on the internet. We both know its lame. We are old enough to talk in a civil manner. Lets not turn this site into a place for weirdos. But i think i get what you are trying to say. Thanks for the advice.

Create self-fulfilling prophecies. Always assume the positive. Assume she likes you. Assume she wants to talk to you. Assume she wants to go out with you. When you think positive, positive things happen.

I would never tell someone to not get a tattoo if they really wanted one. I can just give reasons why I choose not to have them.

Exactly. My logic is just that. Mine. Other people have their opinions. Tons of my buddies have tattoos for personal reasons. Others have them just to show off. I have no desire to do either. But different strokes. I don't look down on people who have them, but I do see a lot of attention whoring with them. Especially the girls and the bro type dudes.

If you get a tat. Get the best artist you can afford. Bad tats are the worst. Seriously.

Also, if you choose to get a Tatoo, it's a good idea to imagine how it'll look on a 60-year old body. Because one day, if you're fortunate, that 60-year old guy will be YOU.

Good idea. Go find an old guy with an old tattoo, and look at the inky smear.

Reminds me of the story of the guy who went to the botanical shop and asked if there was anything that would make a certain girl fall in love with him. They said yeah and he asked what it cost. One dollar. "One dollar? That's all? Here!" So he gave the girl the aphrodesiac and she fell madly in love with him and gave him no rest or peace. A month later, he returned to the botanical shop and asked for the antidote. Sure they had one. It cost one million dollars.

While a good tattoo might be expensive, having it removed is much more difficult and costly.

I like tattoos, it's simple. I must admit i enjoy the attention (even the negative), but it's not a big deal really, i do it beaceuse it's something i like, i don't worry nor think much about it... maybe i don't take my life seriously :D

I think tattoos are cool. But more than that, I mean, tattoos are part of our evolutionary history. In a way, you could even define the arbitrary borderline between Man's evolutionary predecessors and real Man himself as that time at which we started to adorn our skin with art.

Furthermore, I think tattoos can lend a spiritual power to whoever possesses them. I believe in the power of images and archetypes, and to have a powerful archetypal image permanently tattooed to your very skin I believe is one way to embody the characteristics of that archetype and incorporate it into your very being.
