FDA to Crack Down on Supplement Andro

WASHINGTON - The government will crack down on the steroid-like supplement made famous by baseball's Mark McGwire, telling companies Thursday to quit selling androstenedione unless they can prove it's not dangerous.

Commonly called andro, the product is a steroid precursor — the body uses it to make testosterone.

That means it poses the same health risks as directly using an anabolic steroid, the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) is expected to say in warnings telling 23 manufacturers to cease their production.

Anabolic steroids, which build muscle, are controlled substances. But andro — because it is a precursor, not the steroid itself — has long been marketed as a dietary supplement, selling over the counter. U.S. law lets dietary supplements sell with little oversight to ensure they're safe.

But the FDA is citing a seldom-used provision of that law that defines as a dietary supplement natural ingredients that were on the market before 1994 — and says manufacturers must prove that any new ingredients are safe before selling them as supplements.

Andro wasn't on the market in 1994 and thus its makers failed to follow the law's safety provision, said a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services (news - web sites).

The FDA expects its action to at least temporarily halt andro sales. Meanwhile, Congress is considering legislation sponsored by Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., that would permanently end over-the-counter sales of andro, as well as a new steroid named THG, and subject them to the same prescription restrictions as apply to anabolic steroids.

Andro's use skyrocketed after McGwire said he used it in 1998, the year he hit a record-setting 70 home runs for the St. Louis Cardinals. He has said he later quit the supplements.

Medical studies show andro does raise testosterone above normal levels. Side effects of elevated testosterone include acne, baldness, and a drop in the so-called good cholesterol that could lead to heart disease.

Critics are especially concerned about andro's effects if taken by children while they're undergoing puberty.

CIGARETTES EFFECT CHILDREN WHILE THEY'RE UNDERGOING PUBERTY, AND THEY KILL HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. WHY NOT BAN THEM??

Ugh. This country is so screwed up sometimes. How many people have died from Andro????

The FDA wants to make sure it is safe. Do you want it on the market if it is not safe? I don't see the problem with what they're doing.

Cigarettes have nothing to do with this. Should they be banned? Perhaps. But the fact that they are legal does not justify legalizing every dangerous substance.

Its about time the FDA starts cracking down on all the supplements out there. Who knows how bad alot of that pseudo-steroid crap is. Alot of the other supplement crap is snake oil and oversold to people by pumping up the required doses well above what you really need. Alot of the benefits are claims without unarguable evidence. I know friends who are jacked and don't take 10 different supplements and eat 15 chicken breasts a day.

Androstenedione IS dangerous. Infact this particular prohormone is notorious for converting directly into ESTROGEN easier than it converts into testosterone. Where do you think the term "b1tch tits" came from?

Safer prohormones are 4-androstenediol (NOT 5), and 19-norandrostenediol. These convert into estrogen much less often. There is also 0 proof that prohormones help increase muscle mass, because while they do raise testosterone levels in the body, they don't increase natural production of testosterone.

Lol, if you think that juicing is for pussies, you must not work out too much. The majority of people that use AAS train harder, eat better, and generally take better care of themselves than those that don't. Done in moderation, you can do a few cycles with little to no side effects. It's when people abuse AAS, like the 16 year old highschool sophomores who start popping d-bols with ZERO knowledge of AAS. Those are the people who give 'roids a bad name.

eh I'd like to see some proof for this.

In my opinion all steroids have negative long term effects whether people want to face it or not

See some proof? How about you start reading some medical journals instead of listening to what the media tells you. And BTW, IMO, the whole war on steroids thing is a joke. It's not like we have people dying on the streets from REAL drugs. But yeah, go after the juicers who cause all of society's problems. FYI, most people who use steroids are (except for roids) law abiding citizens who hold good jobs and are only trying to further the development of their bodies.

The Bush administration is trying to make themselves look better due to the upcoming election. They know that if they don't get people's minds off of the Iraq debacle, they will not be re-elected. The current focus on steroids is the President's way of trying to look good in the public's eye to garner more votes. And the media is playing right along with them.

The amount of dis-information concerning steroids is mind-boggling.

I agree, the whole steroid war is a joke, i work in law enforcement and i can honestly tell you several people on my force take AAS. When done correctly and with post cycle therapy there are very few serious side effects. I have never touched AAS but i have used a supplement called M1T methoxy 1 test with 4 ad and i can tell you these " Legal supplements" Produce some serious muscle gains very very similar to roids i went from 190 pds to 215 pds in 1 month and my body fat percentage stayed the same. After i was done i used 6 oxo to let my test recover and i stayed at 212. If your carefull and use your head roids or prohormones will not hurt you !

I have never touched roids or even thought about taking them, because I have never really had a hard time increasing my strength/size, preferred to stay away from them and have almost reached my goals by now.

However I think its funny when I hear people say how bad they are etc. etc. cause they've heared somebody say that but really dunno anything about it. Just like when people say smoking marijuana (every now and then) is such a bad thing, because it's officially a "drug" when smoking tobacco is legal and accepted in our society though it kills plenty of people each day...

Some good rational arguments there rather then media fuelled hysteria and hype.
