The issue comes down to legal representation. Defendants in high-profile cases can afford to receive top-notch legal defense, whereas most ordinary people can barely afford the $5,500 retainer fee for a good lawyer plus $1,500 (or whatever) for each day of trial. So people give up and plea guilty. The courts are clogged with cases because there are too many people committing too many crimes. The only real solution is to reduce the number of crimes—particularly drug-related—which would ease the court caseloads and reduce the demand for defense lawyers, which would ultimately force lawyers to be more affordable.
