I would start by never ever come close to an engineering/science major...
Words of the truth...

For most guys, engineering major in college years = celibacy or ugly girls or in the best case ten times more work to finally get the same quality and quantity of HBs...

Engineering sucks from a purely HBs related point of view...

Of course, having an interesting job after you graduate makes up for all of that studying, especially because women cannot fill every hole in your life.

The best thing you could do at the start of college (anywhere, any situation actually) is to make as many friends as possible. Everything gets easier from that point on.

Hey, sweet, keep this thread going! I start college next month, so I can really use this! Say all the things you regret and the things you wish you did, as well as the things that actually worked out well! Learn from your elders, right?

My one regret is simple. Do not rely on meeting girls through classes. Get out there in first year and take every opportunity you get to talk to girls. Hang around in student lounges and whatever you have around campus to meet different crowds.

I lived 2 years of lonliness because of failing to do this very thing. I had friends back home to fall on though and went home frequently.

I'd get to know everyone and have lots of girlfriends...

I'd also spend more time doing my work...

Spend less money on cars...

that's it

Remeber: LIFE IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU'RE PREPARING FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!

Don't justify all the time you spend in college by some future date. Forget the 4.0; go for the 3.0 grade average and the social life. DON'T DO WHAT I DID! Social skills, yes, the ability to get drunk and have drunken fun with people, is more important for your CARREER than perfect grades! Senior executives want a charming, down to earth fellow, not an introverted genius.

I've got to balance this argument.

The difference in career options and earning potential between a B student and an A student can be staggering!

Please don't fire back with the story of some C student who just happened to be at the right place at the right time, where he was offered a three million dollar a year contract to spend the rest of his life doing something he'll enjoy. I know far more college graduates who ended up at the right place at the right time to get a mindless job in a cubicle or to coach eighteen year old retail associates at JCPenney. The odds are that the better you do in college, the better you'll do after you're out! Don't count on dreams. Be a little empirical.

I've been a college student and I've taught college students, and I honestly enjoyed working with both B students and A students - I felt the grade distinction was not monumental when you take into account other attributes, and I offered to write strong letters of recommendation for both sets of students. However, this world is fiercely competitive and some jobs and graduate degree programs may slam the door in your face, despite your better attributes, if your numbers are not up to par with their average.

Grades count. Test scores count. Academic accomplishments count. They are all indicators of how you may possibly perform in your career. If you have solid interpersonal and professional skills, then why sell yourself short by falling short of your academic potential? There are charming slackers out there and employers screen for them.

Also, academic success and personal attributes are not mutually exclusive phenomena! I'm an "introverted genius," but I'm also a "charming, down to earth fellow" - or so I've been told! :) I have had some amazing opportunities in my life attributable to both who I am and the road I have paved. If you are capable of securing a 4.0, then do not settle for a 3.0. A 3.0 is a solid average, and above the mean in many disciplines and "majors," but there may come a day when you decide that you want to pursue a PhD at Stanford and those extra points will help get your foot in the door!

That said, you can get far and enjoy life by just being average! If you have the potential to earn a 3.0 then you can still do well for yourself. Most people are average and have the potential to enjoy life. College is an important time for personal growth on top of intellectual growth. Experiment and have fun, but don't do anything you may regret, like getting busted for possession of drugs or getting evicted from your apartment for throwing a party (that's what your classmates' apartments are for!) Chase girls and be a little bit recklass and immature - you will not have this opportunity again after you graduate. Live and make a variety of friends, but also remember that future bosses and admissions committees will be highly interested in what you accomplished during your college years. A 3.5, high standardized test scores, and hobbies and accomplishments outside of the classroom will look better on paper than a 2.0 with no demonstrable committment to anything besides loafing around with a joystick in one hand and a Corona in the other.

Bottom line: college is where future professionals distinguish themselves from everyone else, and especially from the losers... remember that... but also remember that this is a formative stage of your social and emotional development, so budget your weekends and weeknights so that you have enough time to party and chase girls. Take advantage of it.

i dont agree, engineering isnt necessarily bad for pulling tail. there are two reasons why it might be:

1. you dont have much time

this can be solved by making time, and not ****ing around in your free moments.

2. engineering "types" are nerds

If your a nerd, you arent worried about tail.

as long as you dont talk like an engineer and have social skills, you can pull just as much as any business or english major.

Totally agree, and besides, some of us find brainy girls irresistible. One of the most beautiful women I met at my college was majoring in civ. She wasn't very nerdy, but it was fun to pretend that she was, and every guy I met considered her hot. If you ever want to last in a relationship with a woman like this, you are going to need something going for you besides your "DJ Skills" and some buddies that serve as your friends when you want to get plastered.

Can't go wrong with a solid major and plans for the real world. Just leave yourself some time to have fun while in college, even if you become an engineering major.

Listen to Le Parisien - he's dead on right.

Also remember that nothing matters except confidence ESPECIALLY at college. It's the time to be a bum after all. If you do have insecurities, try not to have them define your life. You probably look better than you think.

Go to all the parties and make sure you make it a priority to socialise with EVERYONE there (not just the girls). Make plenty of aquintances, not a couple of good life-long friends. Do the whole club thing including the drugs (Exstacy/Speed etc)- don't do drugs unless you're out. Try to stay away from smoking weed, especially if it makes you lazy. As Cher from Clueless (yea shutup people) says: "It's Ok for a few spliffs at a party but not to be wasted everyday"

DON'T GET A GIRLFRIEND!!!!!!!!! (If you do - breakup with her before you get serious). Life will change both of you and chances are it won't be a girl you marry, so don't waste the chance to get screwing aload of girls out of your system.

Pick your friends VERY carefully - Look at their lives and if you don't want to BE one of them then don't socialise with them.

Don't play computer games unless they're lads games like sports titles etc - No mad LAN parties! Don't play ALONE. You will go off them later and realise what a waste of time they where.

Focus on the IMPORTANT exams and that will give you the time to LIVE.

Enjoy it!!! - BTW, I'm one jealous 30 year old.

i wouldnt agree on this if its a lads freshman year at college...because everyones new and want to meet more lads to establish a social circle

...but what are your guys's ideas about socializing in college...how would you guys approach ppl in your class...

It's college - It's the time to do things like that when you don't have responsibilities.

I know guys who feel like they've missed their whole lives because they didn't do the stupid stuff when they where younger. Now they're stuck in a boring job with a boring wife and realise that all the cool movies/books they watch/read are actually about real people and wish they had "experienced" some of that instead of just watching/reading about it.

If you disagree then please give me a reason instead of calling me names. I guess it's because "You will fail!!" "You will die!!!" etc arguments that are just made by people who hear the scare stories that are really a tiny mionority. Telling people not to do drugs is like telling a college kid not to drink IMO.

Don't be stupid BUT live your life and take a few risks.

...i think most people stay away from doing the crazy and stupid sh!t because they're afraid of how people with think about them...maybe theyll think to themselves how dumb he is...or how lame...or childish he is...so they leave the scene of having fun and doing stupid sh!t.

and in some way that is true...the reason being the one who does crazy/stupid sh!t and has fun doing it displays his actions without insecurity thus when others say this they get the vibe that your an outgoing rebelious fun guy whereas if you show insecurities youll come off as a loser whose trying to fit in and has no clue what his doing.

thats why one big factor in anyones life should be to always be relaxed.

but other than doing the crazy/stupid sh!t how would you guys socialize...how would you start convos with not only the girls in your class but the guys also building your social value...

Charm&Style - You sounded like you where saying something very profound but quite honestly I had a hard time following it. ;-)

Alot of people look down on it especially from people they think shouldn't be doing it. In otherwords, if I'm not doing it then that guy shouldn't be doing it. It's a bit of jealousy mixed in with a healthy dose of self-rightgeousness. It's the same way AFC dudes DON'T like when their friends start getting with girls - Same old crap, those guys are sleazes, they just aren't picky etc. Don't make decisions based on other people. Generally their oppinions are biased because of THEIR problems and misery loves company.
