If you had the chance to move to japan and learn swordsmithing would you take it?

I've got a friend that knows some legendary sword smiths and japan, and he is willing to ask them to take me under their wing and train me for 5-7 years, after which I would have to help them make swords for 3 years, then I can go off on my own to make swords worth $10,000 each.

I think going to japan to learn this is a worthwhile investment. Probably better than going to university.

This is a serious offer which I have gotten, I am just wondering what anyone else thinks.

It seems too good to be true, but I think it might be the real deal.

I have no reason to doubt the guy's credibility.

Sounds like a fvcking movie. Maybe they'll teach you how to use a sword too! And then tell you you're immortal and have to chop off other immortals' heads until there is only one left :)

Live your life how you want to. If you want to do it, do it. If you live your life based on what others want you to do you will be full of regrets when you're old. If everything checks out make that move.

Assuming this is not a troll post, I think you need to get your head checked.

Don't be so sure. Unless it's a STEM field excluding Psychology and Social Sciences those two now obviously being a joke write-off in our Western leftist indoctrinated universities. University is indeed a waste of time.

My personal opinion is trades are far more valuable now anyway.

OP, unless you already have a true fascination with swords and their culture, it probably isn't worth it. This is something very specialized. Unless you're gonna be happy with it for a long time, I would not do it, even if it paid pretty good. You're also going to be living in an foreign country, which has its pluses and minuses. You're at the age where so much of what you do will determine your trajectory for the rest of your life. You really should think this out and ask people with actual experiences more similar to it, instead of asking on an internet message board where people come to talk about gaming women.

But with what you said, it does sound too good to be true. Have you done any research on the people who will be training you? Do they really sell swords for that much? And how consistently? What is their lifestyle like and how comfortably do they live? How much time will you have to devote to it? Maybe you can go to school part-time too as backup? So many questions unanswered...

This may be true to an extent, although in fairness, there are fields outside of STEM that require a university degree and can be highly lucrative (i.e. law, finance, accounting, etc.) My point is, if you're going to go into trades, swords-making is probably not your best option (especially if you have to spend 7-8 years learning it). Being an electrician or an elevator repairman or something would probably make a lot more sense. Just my opinion, of course..

Yeah I didn't include those for the over abundance of women now in those fields, the relationship with the gubmint they have and the inability to do cash jobs for work to bypass feeding the welfare leeches. Not to mention if and when it truly goes pear shape they will be dead in the water, mind you so will most other fields.

Don't always be the one putting yourself out for her. Don't always be the one putting all the effort and work into the relationship. Let her, and expect her, to treat you as well as you treat her, and to improve the quality of your life.

if they are for real, they intend to work you like a dog and pay you nothing, and in 7 years, if you play your cards right you can be retired here in the US, not just starting out as a nobody in a field full of "old name" smiths.

ok OP im not gonna troll like others so listen:

1.japanese are very racist, they dont like teaching their traditional stuff to gaijin (foreigners) , im half jap, and people treat me like dirt :(
im kinda surprised that they are willing to teach you these stuff

2. there are maybe a handful of authentic swordmasters left in japan
i think one is in kyoto , other one was in niigata or somewhere in north idk
anyway just know that there are very few of these guys left, so take care you are not being scammmed

3.swordsmithing is very difficult and time consuming. this is not for americans, you guys are just too effing lazy lol
a katana can take from 3 months to 3 years to forge.

4.japan is an expensive country, especially tokyo, how dafuq are you gonna survive?

5.if you do go there tell my parents "switch is still alive" :D

Well I got the offer from a sword dealer. He knows the sword-smiths, he is well acquainted with the katana world and well respected.

He says he can make me popular in japan if I go there, which I believe to be true.

Well, see, my father just died last week, and I approached the sword guy to ask him for some advice. When he says that this might be an opportunity for me to take the inheritance and go to japan and learn to make swords. According to him I'll only need about €1000 a month to survive, just like in Amsterdam(where I live), and it might be cheaper. I could be living in a rural area of japan.

In return all I have to do is make some swords for him. He will ask a few of these professional sword-smiths, that's spent 30 years learning from the "national living treasure" family in japan that holds the ancient knowledge.

I am a german, which is as close as it gets to japanese as a gaijin, so who knows - they might respect me. Germans are good engineers, and I am a perfectionist, I think I could make a pretty good sword TBH.

According to him I will be spending 24 hours a day making swords for 5-7 years. When I am done I can sell the swords for $10,000 each.

It sounds like a movie, I can barely imagine going to japan to learn sword-smithing.

He says that most japanese people quit soon though because it's so hard. I think it might be my kind of thing though, because I do dig gangster sh*t, I love tough brawny stuff, but I am into spiritualism and humbless aswell. I will be learning real Bushido from a real samurai, a 7 dan Aikido Black Belt.

These are simply friends of my friend - the japanese sword dealer. I think I just need to fill up my bank account with enough money for survival, and then just fly over and see how it goes. Might be expensive though. €1000 a month for 5-7 years could be 12*7*1000 = 84000.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.........

Lets say you are going to do this, there are some things you must know or else there is no way for you to make any money.

- Who is buying?
- At what price?
- Why that price?
- Will they still buy in 10 years?
- Are you in touch with your market?
- How do you get in touch with them?
- How do you stay in touch with them?
- How are you going to make sure you can give them what they want?

- What are you going to do when your trainer dies a half a year / a year / 2 years down the road? Can you manage you carreer on your own?

Hey...this is your chance for a real adventure...and your dating life will likely skyrocket as well if you apply yourself and you can learn a real trade...if it doesn't work out or they work you too hard...you could always make ends meet as an English teacher or tutoring English....anyone telling you to say no is crazy........Japan>>>>>>>the US

Don't think, just do it and thank me later. Only a wallflower or complete wuss would say no to this oppurtunity.

First of all, you are the typical American loser boy who has to resort to teaching in an Asian country to get laid, all the while make a piddly amount of money. You are the type of guy that has an angry and vengeful view of the USA, all because you could never get laid over here. You will be the type of guy who when you are 55, overweight, and bald, who will make trips over to Thailand just to get laid by some teenage lady boys. I mean how many guys like you have we seen on this site? "Oh America sucks, it's so much better over here in XXX, women love me, not like in America....blah blah blah blah blah blah". It never ends it seems.

OP you really need to think long and hard about this. I do find it slightly odd that as soon as you mentioned inheritance, your friend of a friend's eyes lit up and told you to go over there to do this. That to me is a big red flag. Sounds like they just want some slave labor.

First, it doesn't sound like you would have any time for a second job, so you will be forking out money every month, for 5-7 years. Think about that. No income. Until the age of what.....28-30? Those are prime nest egg building years that you are not only not making anything, but losing money. Not to mention Japan is super super expensive to live in. Think of NYC on steroids. No way you are going to only spend that amount of money to live. Double that. At least.

Secondly, it really sounds like slave labor to me. Working that much every day, with no pay? Cmon. And knowing how much of a closed and traditional society Japan is, I find it very very very VERY hard to believe that your average Japanese buyer of swords is going to want to buy from a non Japanese. I know I wouldn't if I were looking for a authentic, traditional Japanese sword.

Keep us posted and good luck.

What is your deal? Why are you always following me around all of the time? All I did was call you what you are...a spade is a spade and a white knight is a white knight.

And as usual....you are talking out of your a$$.....i love the states because it is my home and I will go back soon...but every young person should seek adventure IMO and this is his chance....a chance to live 1-3 years in a foreign culture and nation and a great one at that...a few years in Japan is much more exciting than spending the next 1-3 years at home where you will be for the rest of your life...why not be a man and have a set of balls and take a risk that will likely pay off big time...life is about experiences and adventure...

So don't lash out at me just because you are dead inside Concordon and are content with your onetis in your safe little bubble forever. Maybe you have been roiding up a little too much lately trying to impress her and are getting ansy....

You are probably just bitter because you are stuck in the same place with one chick who obviously wears the pants in your relationship...i don't know...but i got just as many woman in the states as I do here...Taiwan isn't that much easier man....if anything places like LA and New York are a good bit easier because there is no language barrier and the chicks are super straight forward in those places...LA was very easy when I was there a few years ago...

I didn't come to Taiwan for women...I came here to travel and most importantly to learn Longfist Kungfu...it was either here or China....if i was going somewhere for easy women it would have been China, Thailand or the Philipines...so don't talk like you know anything about me...

And more importantly don't say stuff to people online that we all know you wouldn't have the guts to say to someone's face in real life...i wonder...as much as you like to throw your weight around here on sosuave...have you ever even been in a real fight???? Or do you just like to stare at yourself in the mirror while whacking off and pumping iron after getting roided up? Seems like you are compensating for something to me.

So stop blindly accusing me of stuff that you have no idea about. Someone really needs to slap the **** out of you.

Hey CC just cause you are banging some half breed westernized Korean b1tch is no reason to harp on others. Teaching English is great and has a ton of perks, women are just one of those... I would bet anything CordonCordon is half asian and pissed off at anyone who can score better than he can with just the modicum of effort.

I know guys that live here in China and go over to Thailand to fvck teenage girls all the time... and you are cutting them down for it? Get off your high horse, you're with a fake asian... wear pleather much? Ya I bet you do.

Japan is wicked, I lived there for awhile... making swords...meh that might be good, teaching English in Japan, thats where its at mate.

BTW America DOES SUCK and yeah my friends are 55 yearsold, overweight and ugly as a can of smacked a22holes but they are pulling more teenage pvssy than most DJ's will see in their entire life with almost NO effort or PUA skills.

Jealous much.
