I know people my age who have their own cars and I can't even imagine how they got around 15k to pay for it... Some say their parents helped them and some of them actually paid for it themselves. But I am a broke college kid who is looking to make money out of my own work. I've been applying for jobs but they are minimum wage so who knows how long it will take me.

How did you guys get the money to buy the car you own?

$15,000 would be way too nice of a car for me. $1,500 is more my style; that's about what I paid for the truck I drive now, and it's actually much nicer than what I drove in high school. I refuse to ever make a car payment. Get a motorcycle if you care about looking cool; what matters is that you pay cash and avoid payments.

Good post Bible.

I actually sold my car. Don't have a car at the moment. If in the future I need one, I'll pick up something cheap with good gas mileage. Something like a Geo Metro, or Geo Tracker. A decent one could be found for less that 2 K.

You don't need a lot of money to buy a car. They are not good investments, but if you need one, get something you can afford.

15k is a pre owned vehicle from a dealer. They are all on car loans making payements every month. There is no point in doing that.

For around 5k you could buy a nice car. Mustang GT. Contour SVT. Taurus SHO.

For 15k brother, you could buy a BMW 8 series!!!! That's a super car.

You not saying where you live. Where? We could pick you worthy choices.

Before buying a car, think about the further money that you'll need for gas and maintenance.
I know that owning a car is a status thing in the US, but wouldn't you rather use the money for going out or even to travel? These are things that expand your mind, make you more social and more interesting. All of these are way more important than owning a car.

Well I would like a car to be able to travel out to places out of walking distance and be able to go places without asking for rides. Plus, I always wanted my own car. :)

Ah, ok. My parents always buy cars from the dealership because its being sold from those business suit guys and they're more "trustworthy". I should start buying from other people if I want to actually afford it. **** that loan with interest bs. And I live around the Chicagoland area.

Man, I want a car.

I don't care what anyone says. Those chargers are one of the nicest looking vehicles I've seen. Especially the multi colored ones with chrome wheels or colored wheels.

I can't even lie. I see ten of these every day though in Atlanta. But they are still pretty as hell.

duh, get on craig's list and look at all the sub $1000 cars, dude. Get over yourself and your fancy dreams. Save and invest your money and then, once you do have enough to buy one, see if you still want to waste it on a losing bet like a car. There is no life without a set of wheels, but it does not need to be a fancy set of wheels. The money wasted on interest, full coverage insurance, taking it to a dealer for maintenance, etc, make having a nicer car a BIG waste of money. Learn to do a lot of the work yourself, and for SURE, give $10 each to some local AutoZone guys (several of them, in different stores) for REAL references to a good, local mechanic, who does work in his own garage, at fair prices.
