I think I may have been a victim of Asian racism!

Well I suppose some Indian people (who are "South" Asian BTW, not "East" Asian) have concerns, but I've rarely seen it. Most of my friends who are Asian have parents who don't care who they date, as long as it's not a prostitute or a terrorist (now I'm gonna hear "OMG the racist asians discriminate against hookers and terrorists! Where's the tolerance?").

However I have yet seen Asians lynch any white people, or drag whites behind their Confederate-flagged truck, which is what I was referring to when I said asians tend to be more "subtely" racist, rather than "violently" racist.

naah, they don't like white people. They just see Farangs as walking ATM machines - it's a reason that Thailand is called LOS (Land of Smiles).

Can't you just accept that racism is everywhere, not just in the U.S.?

diplomatic: Have you been to Asia for any period of time? I have been to many of it's countries(Most for only a couple months or so but we didn't do the tourist thing, we stayed in one or two areas) with a lebanese friend who speaks Mandarin and Korean(Did the teaching thing in Korea and learned Mandarin growing up) . It was great and disturbing at the same time, my friend was like a spy for us. I have to say that those signs that was posted up earlier was true and it is in many countries in Asia(Thailand mostly), however the very rude and disturbing comments we got wherever we went soured me on the whole continent a bit(They would always insult us in their language, sometimes to our face and especially at my lebanese friend who showed great restraint). We didn't speak Thai, Japanese, etc... so we never knew if there was insults but the favoratism of the nationals was there, as it is in any 3rd or second world country really(Double pricing minus Japan).

I would like to say though that there were many great people there that treated us well, even when they knew they weren't getting any of our money. It's just that the amount of bad experiences we had, especially when one of us spoke the language, that really surprised me. Of course if we didn't speak their language and never knew what they really thought of us behind our backs we would have thought those people were the nicest we've ever seen(I never experienced this in West or North aftrica, in the middle east(Jordan and Lebanon), or in India) nearly as much as in Asia.

Also I don't get the black coffee thing. I'm from Canada and we use that all the time. I also have been to the states hundreds of times(Live 10 min from the border) and everywhere I went black cofee is the norm because, well unaltered coffee is black. Didn't matter if it was in a black majority area in the south or the west coast or NE, nobody or any race gave me **** for saying black coffee. Maybe I'm just lucky or maybe I just missed all the people sensitive to this subject like you did with the asians(Although I really don't see how you could).

America may not be perfect but it is decades ahead of Asia and most of the world in terms of racial tolerance.

LOL at the israeli one, my mate just got back from backpacking Asia for 2 months, and he said the israelis are well known for being awkward over there.

for instance, waking up at 5am so they don't stay a whole night, and then complaing about the hostel, so they get their money back .

WOW....

THAT is what you people consider racism??  just be happy that's the most racism you'll have to encounter. 'Cuz I usually associate that word with lynchings, harrassment, and discrimination..... see how easy you got it?

I'd feel more disturbed about the fact that it was the MAN, and not the woman that decided to smile at you.

Yeah, about...well, a third of my life now.

They would always insult us in their language, sometimes to our face and especially at my lebanese friend who showed great restraint
Did you accidently insult them? Or speak to them loudly in English? I doubt anyone who insult you openly for no reason.

Personally, in all my years, I've only seen 1 person in Asia insult an American, and that was the American's fault for insulting behaviour.

Also I don't get the black coffee thing. I'm from Canada and we use that all the time.
One of my friends ordered a "black coffee" during his student exchange in the US, and some black guys started harrassing him. Eventually he had to go get a policeman to get them off his back.

America may not be perfect but it is decades ahead of Asia and most of the world in terms of racial tolerance.
Judging from recent events, I'm starting to doubt that. I mean, the same people calling Asians racist are at the same time being racist to Asians. If that's how Americans think, well...

Pardon me for asking Dip_lies, but are you Asian? That might explain why you havn't experienced any racisim in Asia.

I've been to Bkk 15+ times, so I've picked up some of the language. I know some of the most basic swear/dirty words and understand Thai a little bit. The Thais don't know that, so they speak freely around me since I fall in under the Farang category. I've seen it numerous times when Thais would smile at Farangs and act politly towards them while they speaking **** about them in Thai. It happens alot.

And besides, do you how any idea how Thais are indoctrinated with Nationalism from birth. ****, you have to stand up in the cinema for the national anthem everytime you want to see a movie. And do you know the lyrcis of the National Anthem? It's got some serious nationalistic/racistic **** going on.

No we didn't speak loudly or do anything insulting(We are Canadian also as I said in my post). We got to the point where either my friend would go into the store separate from me like he doesn't know me and see what they said about me or else we pretended to just know the basic language(Well that's all I knew anyway); things like Hello, thank you, please, etc... anything to be polite and most of them were still jerks. Maybe it was becuase my friend looked slightly middle eastern(many lebanese don't look like those from the arab penninsula but you can still tell a bit).

Yes I'm Asian, but I've rarely seen racism against white friends who come with me on vacation.

Um, ok. So Thailand is an authoritarian nazi state? If it was that serious, I think most people would know about it. You probably experienced the worst.

I haven't been to Thailand though, but since you guys were saying "all asians are racist", I assumed it included ALL Asian countries.

Blackbird - You mentioned your friend is arab. Some asians are getting annoyed with arabs after the terrorism things (altho less in East Asia, where theres less terrorism). But Americans hate arabs too after 9/11, so its probably not just an asian thing.

Not to hijack the thread, but there is a big difference between a state indoctrinating its people with nationalism and authoritarian Nazism. For instance, the French government is very involved in state-building nationalism through education. I think there is a lot of passive racism in the world because of the widespread use of nationalism by governments.
