Hey guys. I decided to start Kick Boxing and i am going for 1 free lesson next monday to see if i like it. I'll be watching one lesson this friday, to make sure it's not some cardio shyt.

My goals are improving my cardio, training regularly, learning a new discipline (i have done karate (shotokan) for 4 years when i was younger), improving my self confidence, and making new friends if possible.

Has any of you done kick boxing before? Tell me all about it!

P.S. I don't want people to start arguing about which style is better and what not! This thread is about kick boxing, and kick boxing only! Thank you!

I have not kick-boxed, but I have pulled a hamstring doing other things, and it is in part keeping me from starting kickboxing. Stretch like crazy before doing your kickboxing workout, as I would not wish this injury on anyone.

I see a lot of new mainstream interest in martial arts, does this come from that reality tv show about MMA that they have in the US?

I don't know, Phoenix, i never watched that show. In my case,i started thinking about martial arts while watching boxing on tv. I felt like i wanted to do it too, just to see if i could knock a guy out and feel the satisfaction of victory in a one on one fight.

I then thought that boxing was a bit risky, as i didnt want my nose broken or a concussion, so martial arts popped in my head. I've done karate before, so i feel comfortable with the idea.

Yeah, martial arts seem to have many positive aspects to them and anyone can grow physically and mentally from practicing them.

It depends how your experience with shotokan was. If you wore a lot of big pads when you sparred, you'll be hurting a lot till you learn to defend against strikes. Also, we could punch to the face when sparring, so that's another thing to get used to.

Create self-fulfilling prophecies. Always assume the positive. Assume she likes you. Assume she wants to talk to you. Assume she wants to go out with you. When you think positive, positive things happen.

We had just tibia pads and gloves as protection. We didn't hit the face when punching, but stopped as close as possible to the face without actually hitting it. We could kick and punch to the torso and belly with full power. As for the legs, we could do a hook motion to make the opponent fall or lose balance, but we didn't litterally kick the other guy's legs.

So i dunno, do you guys break your noses or something when you fight? How violent/bloody is it? I don't mind getting hit, but i wouldn't like having bruises all over my face at all times, you know...

When I did spar, kicks and punches could go anywhere, but no elbows could be used since the guys I trained with actually fought in the ring under those rules. So look out for kicks to the legs and head as well as knees. There were no broken noses since we did have helmets and boxing gloves on.

I never kickboxed, but I boxed for many years. Wearing the occasional shiner or split lip is par for the course, if you're worried about that sort of thing before you even start maybe think again whether its something you want to do.

And yes, broken noses bleed A LOT.
