I believe the turning point for socializing and dating has been 2007-8

Thats when we got the financial crysis globally that made people think more seriously about thei futures, then we got smartphones getting more and more ground becoming wide spread but most of all we got the rise of social networks and easily available internet connection through portable devices.

Basically it slowly changed till 2012-3 till the current state of things with instagram putting the last tombstone on the old way with put the turbo on the collpase of the old system.

Old cellphones made it easier to communicate more privately and somehow helped, smarphones and social media made it so easy that it became impossible.

Smartphones, social media and widespread portable internet made to society what globalization made to markets.

Well I think the problem is that people now use the smart devices and social media to avoid any uncomfortable feeling. It used to be the case that people would talk to one another in person because there wasn’t another platform really for distraction as we were out and about during the day, other than reading. And people overcame their shyness and became more socialized to be able to flirt and enjoy interactions. Then with the advent of the smartphone, as soon as people begin to have a little anxiety, boredom, or feelings of discomfort, out comes their phone. I’m just as guilty of it as the next person. But it’s a f*cking tragedy.

True about the socializing problem where the smartphone is a way out, at the same time we have the problem of perception.

Now people see enhanced pictures and fake life styles on social media and they either get depressed cause they dont match or screw their entire life cause of "fear of missing out".

Its basically the sex and the city life style for every one and most women either dont settle till they fall apart or they screw up their relationship to chase that fantasy.

The average and the above average guy is getting depressed too cause he eithers faces attention wh0res and mistake their disinsterest for his low value or he simply find girls who consider 80% of men in general below average.

I saw a chart somethere where according to some research the amount of young people having sex was somehow balances till late 00s, after that it didnt change for women but dropped terribly for men, not sure if its cause of competition or cause they no longer need to provide sex in order to get attention.

Just look at Simon Sinek: "the millenial in the workplace" (from 2016).

Cellphones are a drug like alcohol (dopemine creating system)

Everything is instant (no need to wait for the time of your movie)

Unlimited opportunities without effort (dating app)

We grew up impatient : everything now and most be perfect within the 10000 choice without effort (our parents told us we were perfect)

Just because you have "any uncomfortable feeling" doesn't mean that you would overcome your shyness, be able to flirt or enjoy interactions. You can just be suffering in silence or feel in space if you do try to make an interaction. Imagine being in a place and you stick out like a sore thumb and nobody talks with you or you don't talk with anyone and then you go home feeling frustrated. I don't have any positive social memories that I can say using a mobile device now would be a crutch. I used mobile devices precisely to zone-out and watch videos on demand, either on the Tablet, or smartphone. Perhaps I'm too cynical to see the damage.

Also, you mentioned books (i.e. reading), and there was also walk-man headphones which have really been around since the 80's. People can listen to music and put their headphones on. That has been around a long time. Also, Gyms themselves have always had Cable-Tv where people could stick head-phones into them and watch something while working out. So I doubt there is any technology I'm using, if I'm zoning-out, that hasn't been there before all these mobile devices. This is something I think that deals with women more if they have an easier access to Chads and more guys are incel as a result of being shut out the market.
