Closest hotel room I could find was in Houston. Took me 11 hours to drive 350 miles. Now I find out there is a hole in the levee and the lake is draining into the city.
Great, all of my stuff will be ruined.

There are a couple of posters who live in that area but evacuated to a safe area and are able to post. As far as I know, diablo is the only one who stayed in the path of the hurricane in Baton Rouge. I know others have most likely lost most if not all of their things, but they are safe. Diablo is without power and may be without other basic necessities like food and water.
I've lived in Bay St. Louis and Gulfport, MS. Everytime a hurricane finds it's way into the Gulf of Mexico the same warnings come in. People will board up and get prepared only to have the hurricane either go in a different direction or weaken and do no damage. It takes a lot of time, energy and effort to prepare...and it's usually for nothing. That leads to a certain level of complacency and a "why bother, it's not going to come anyway" attitude. That is why people don't evacuate and don't listen to mandatory orders to leave. And then there are people who just don't have the ability to leave from lack of money, no vehicle or disability.
That's what I thought at first. But then I read more into it. A lot of people are way too poor, and they can't afford to clear out. That's why there were so many people taken into the Superdome. They couldn't fit everyone, and lot's of others weren't even close enough to go there...and that's why so many died.
