Good job guys, create reality and familyguysfan got some very good points especially.
I live in a house that is ranked within the top 3 on campus for the best parties/atmosphere. Here is how we do it:
First of all, realize that you throw large parties for one clear reason - to make money. Gaining more popularity and getting laid are just side bonuses. (at least for me).
Now, with this in mind, remember that you will need enough alcohol that a lot of people will buy it. HOWEVER, you can't offord to give away tons of it, so overbuying is an issue as well.
Generally, we are able to get 100 people drunk on 2 kegs. Yes, a lot of people end up with 2-3 cups, but that's life. Lately we have been adding 1.75 of UV BLUE, 1.75 of Clear UV and possibly Parrot Bay. ( Cheap stuff for shots) so people can drink more.
This is how you set the prices - $5 for a cup. $1 for a shot. NO EXCEPTIONS. Girls will flirt and beg for free cups, guys will say they have no money. People will offer $4 or say they will pay you later. Be stubborn. "$5." You are here to AT LEAST make your money back.
Kegs- cheapest beer you can find. Or, get one keg with strong beer to go first. Icehouse works ok. We usually get Busch.
I can't stress how improtant it is to lock the doors to placed you dont want people to go. I found two people naked on my bed ready to get busy when i forgot this obvious rule. Do not be lazy about this.
We restrict our upstairs for "VIP ONLY" we put a large barrier in the way and write those words on a piece of paper so people know. This is where our closer friends can hang out and where you can bring ladies by saying "Let's go party in VIP"
Let me remind you the cardinal rule of the party throwing -
Drunk People - Irresponsible People
After 7 beers they will not give a sh1t about your couch, stereo or hot tub. They will act like a bunch of belligerent, obnoxious idiots. This is normal. This is also the reason YOU MUST stay sober for most part of your party. You must have at least 2 somewhat sober people running the party - getting people away from expensive stereo system, making sure people dont jump on couches or get in the hottub with all of their clothes on. Being sober also helps when the cops come. When party calms down and there are 10-15 people left, then start drinking if you wish.
Things that can hurt your business, learn how to prepare:
1. Person will try to buy a cup with a $100 bill. Make sure you have at least $100 in 5's and 1's so you can give change.
2. People will bring Beer bongs. CHARGE THEM $5. We didnt, and there was a lot of free beer down the drain.
3. People brining their own. Fine, you either pay $3 to get in, save your beer and drink ours for $5, or you give us your beer as a tax.
4. People saying "they are driving". One Sober cab per group only. We can't allow too many not paying customers in.
Decide who is going in to buy booze for party. Share profits depending on %. In my experience, we have ALWAYS made profits.
I jokinly made a contract for one of my roommates becuase he had trouble grasping the concept. Here it is:
Fair responsibility – we ALL pitch in the money, all 3 of us.
It is our responsibility to call people. If people do not show up and we do not make any money, all THREE of us lose money.
If the cops show up and give us a ticket, all of us are paying for it.
CLEANING and PREPARATION will be performed BEFORE and AFTER the party. Nobody is allowed to skip out on either, otherwise they forfeit partial/all of their share.
The profits will be split three ways AND/OR put towards utilities.
Being gone for the most of the party, or being in a room with a girl for the most of the time IS NOT SUPERVISING.
Nobody will be allowed to be absent for more than 30 minutes unless your roommates agree to it and have things under control.
Money made is not to be stolen for individual needs. Obviously.
The way we set it up is most of the profits went to utilities.
Music. I will not argue with anyone here about preferences, but i will tell you what DOES work. Top 40 rap and dance. Remember - girls are the ones that you must appeal to here. If girls dance, guys will too. So 50 cent, David Banner "Play", Nina Sky - move your body, Nelly (classic), Ebony Eyes - "In your eyes". Your music will be one of the most improtant factors if you want to have a really good party. Make sure there is a lot of room for people to dance and mingle, move couches, chairs and lock em somewhere if you can. Invest in a good stereo system.
Lights - it would be nice if you could dim them in some areas of the house. We have 5 black lights, a strobe light, and a mini disco light for our dance club room.
Feel free to ask any questions, and remember - there will be a lot of stuff to clean up. YOu could pay someone to do it, or do it yourself. In any case, your house will get a lot of wear and tear.
P.S. VERY improtant if you live in a quiet neighborhood. - People walking to their cars will throw trash in people's yards. After the party, or early morning go around and collect all of it.
Good luck to everyone, happy partying.
