the thing about being funny is that funny is like a piece of pie. if you laugh at your own joke you are taking some of the pie and not leaving enuf to go around. for something to be funny people have to figure it out on their own and laugh themselves, not have you do it for them. laughing at your own jokes doesn't make them funnier.
funniness is also something that there is usually an "us" and a "them". the "us" people are laughing at the "them" people because of some situation or dynamic. peoples desire is to feel important and know it all. a joke works because you probably led a person down a path where they didn't know what was comming next and when they figure it out, depending on how much you had their mind swimming, they will laugh harder to make themselves not feel stupid.
people laugh to feel superior.
people laugh so they don't feel inferior.
basically the basics of comedy.
and keeping a straight face is always funny when poking fun at a woman, as is, as somebody mentioned, saying stuff like "anyway...." after you say a comment.
