How important are foreign languages for getting into a good college?

I figured I'd post it here since it is about High School. I took spanish 1 last year (freshmen year). I'm supposed to take spanish 2 this year, but I'm thinking about dropping the class to have more time for going to the weight room since I can't after school because of football, and I really want to focus on athletics. However, I understand that school should be my #1 priority, so I'm wondering, how important is having a foreign language when looking at colleges? And how many years of it do most colleges require you to have?

Well colleges are looking for someone who is well-rounded. But they don't necessarily require that you've taken a language. BUT... if you haven't, then they will probably make you take a language course to graduate... and HS spanish is a joke compared to college spanish.

Take it. If your school has something like LAtin though. Really though Foriegn Languages look really good keep it. Normally Four years for college. But you could get away wit two different languages two years each. looks even better. French and Spanish.
I'd recomend staying in

I wouldn't take a dead language like Latin... take Spanish... it's easier than French and it's convenient to know nowadays. When I went to college, it said I had to take a language test to see if I needed to take it as a course or not. I was able to be exempt from the test luckily, so I didn't have to take a language in college... I think at my school (SUNY) you had to have taken at least 3 years of a foreign language with at least a B average... so if you took 2 years of As or 4 years with 2 Bs and 2 Cs... you still had to take the test...

Latin students score about 150 points higher on average on english Sats and about 100 on Math. atin is the root of almost every language on earth. Latin is not dead it is just not a native language spoken in any country. In fact latin is widley used. LAtin is BAse of Spanish,French,Romanian,Portreges,Italian, and many more

French= mispronounced and mispelled latin

Spanish=mispelled latin

tow major languages. Sencond latin is vert easy. The number system is exactly the same as Spanish. Uno dos trace... A lot of the words are the same
Latin
amigo= friend

Spanish
amigo=friend.

Latin is by far the best language to know. With it you can speak almost any language on earth

Right, eventhough you'll have more job oppertunities if you can speak spanish??

Saying french and spanish is mispelled latin is stupid. Kinda like how japanese and korean is mispronounced, mispelled, and miswriten chinese.

I agree that you have a good point when you say that knowing latin can be helpful... it definitely helps with vocab on the SATs... and it can help when you are learning other romance languages, like French or Spanish. BUT... just by knowing Latin doesn't mean that you will KNOW Spanish... you would have to try to learn it. I took French for four years and Spanish for 2 years. I started in French, so learning Spanish was sOOOOO easy... but obviously this guy isn't going to use his Latin background to excell in Spanish or Italian, etc... He is only going to take what is required of him... so the Latin really wouldn't help him as much as say Spanish would. SO MANY places want you to be bilingual in Spanish nowadays. If you want to work in Europe though, learn French because it is spoken in a lot of countries and in a lot of places the schools require it.

Learn and know Latin. You will be able to understand, write, and read much better. Latin is difficult but well worth the effort. Learning and knowing Latin will help you throughout your life.

most colleges REQUIRE at least 2 years of the SAME language and if you want to go to college, at least a good one that you would enjoy, take another year and make sure you take some real classes. i was talking with my guidance councelor this morning about dropping accounting because i want to be an engineer and really dont want to waste my time with the class however he reccomended i keep it because it will look good on my transcript and possibly give me the edge over someone else.

Your high school counselor? :rolleyes:

You do not need to have taken any foreign language courses for two years if you play your cards right. Go to community college, get 60 transferrable credits, and transfer to a college. Et voila!

yea it was my high school counselor, only one year left and im off to college. but some high schools, mine anyway, requires 2 years of the same language to graduate so the language thing was no problem for me. 1 of spanish then 2 of french.

Take them til all four years.

They suck ass, but you don't wanna have to take them in college if you've taken a fourth level class.

I know so many people who are stuck in college spanish, and they all say it blows. College foreign language is just so much harder than high school. I took spanish 4 my junior year and knew NOTHING and got Bs.

It sucks, but take it.

2 years will get you into school, but 4 is much more valuable.

Well i taking German 4 this year. oak you're not alone out there. I don't know what it is about learning lanuages but they're just fun. I was going to get out, but for some reason i didn't. I guess I'm hooked. Plus the classes are really easy. :) . Well i heard that most colleges require 2 years of a lanuage. Some even require 2 years before you can even get in.
