I phrased myself poorly. The pain following a workout isn't the actual acid.

From a scientific study:

The expression lactic acid, or lactate, is used most commonly to describe the intense pain felt during exhaustive exercise, especially short events like the 400 metres and 800 metres. To explain what it is we first have to look briefly into how the working muscles use energy (ATP). Actively contracting muscles obtain Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) from glucose stored in the blood stream and the breakdown of glycogen stored in the muscles. Initially pyruvic acid and small amounts of ATP are generated from the breakdown of glucose. The pyruvic acid mixed with oxygen is converted to carbon dioxide, water and ATP. When muscles contract vigorously for long periods the circulatory system begins to lose ground in delivery of oxygen. In these conditions most of the pyruvic acid produced in the breakdown of glucose is converted to lactic acid (LA). As the lactate is produced in the muscles it leaks out into the blood and is carried around the body. If this condition continues the functioning of the body will become impaired and the muscles will fatigue very quickly. When oxygen becomes available the lactic acid is converted to pyruvic acid and then into carbon dioxide, water and ATP.

I think that's about the final word.

I know that Muay Thai practitioners strike and rub their shins with hard substances to condition them. I believe the science behind these techniques is that the conditioning causes microfractures along the bone, which proceed to heal up by being filled in with a very hard boney substance, thus making the actual bone harder. However i don't see how this would apply to iron body techniques or striking your muscles to toughen them. Is the damaged muscle repaired with stronger, tougher muscle tissue afterwards? Or is it just that you're getting used to taking the pain and shock of the hit now?

I think boxers throw medicine balls at their stomachs, not to make them literally "harder", but to get used to taking punches.

Try hitting your balls, see if that makes them stronger.

Ok some people mention punching things making your knuckles harder.. Not true. All it does is damage and kill the nerves in that area, so you no longer feel it, and you might build up slight callouses, but mostly its just the nerve damage that makes it less painful.. So yeah, probably the same for your muscles, they wont be stronger, but you wont feel the pain as much because the nerves will be dead.

your muscles are contracting when you take the punch obvoiusly, so they are being work. If they arent contracting your gonna have the wind knocked out of you
