Is he buying the vehicle? If so, I guess what he says goes. But fwiw, when I was 18, I almost bought an s10. I ended up buying a Nissan instead and I still have that truck. The odometer broke long ago; I think it probably has about 250k miles. My mechanic had it apart not long ago; he said the inside of the engine looks like it has 50K miles, mostly because I changed the oil every 3000 miles. I'm probably going to keep it until I die.

Regarding learning to drive a manual, just find a big empty parking lot. You can learn in one afternoon. Economy cars are easiest. I have driven a manual s10, and that tranny is a b!tch to shift; it is nothing like my Nissan manual. The s10 manual feels like I am driving a full-size truck.

Quoted for truth. All you need is a couple hours and a wide open space like an empty parking lot or flatland country roads. I learned on a Ford Danger with a nub for a clutch. When I practiced on an new economy car, the clutch was tighter than a 12 year old.
