Thanks for the replies! (Although we nearly got a flame war!)

I quickly read through all the replies and it seems the general consensus is that I should go below parallel with squats, which is what I intend to do. (Don't worry about me going overboard; if anything, I won't push myself enough!).

I guess I'll start with lower weights and work up to a comfortable level. By that, I mean a level where the last time in a set is manageable, but barely.

Because the first week is 'max testing' week, I'll post up my journal sometime next week (or should I just add it to this thread?).

I would start a separate thread for the journal.

Have you been practicing your technique with just a barbell? If not then it wouldn't be advisable to max test, or indeed start piling weight on the bar. If you feel your able to to do it properly however, then go for a 5RM. And remember to warm up. If you can, post up a video of your squats and then people can suggest improvements.
