What's a spotter even supposed to do on a squat? Why can't you just drop the weight off your back if you can't stand back up with it?

Just don't do barbell exercises above your head outside the smith or a rack and your dilemma is solved. There are plenty of alternatives.

I even do seated MP with a barbell in a rack. Unless i drop it directly on my head (very unlikely and a spotter isn't about to catch that much weight as it completely leaves my hands before it hits me anyway) it's not going to hurt me if i drop it.

a spotter in a squat is there to stabilize you by pretty much hugging you from behind, cus your legs will still have the strength to push up but your stabilizers will hold you back from completing the rep ie. you're gonna fall over

I just squat in a squat rack, if I fail, I just go the extra 3" down to sit it on the rack.

BB bench, though, I always use a spotter.
