I want to try skydiving.....not because I really want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, but as a test of courage.

For those who have done it:

Has any stressful situation that you have faced (since skydiving) seemed like a cakewalk?

I guess I am afraid of getting myself in a stressful situation (e.g. physical confrontation) and freaking out because of fear. I guess I am figuring If I go skydiving, this would not happen and anything frightening will seem easy.

I suffer from OCD and I am anxious most of the time (always thinking what if), so maybe skydiving would help.

Skydiving, hangliding, surfing or any extreme sports are great cause it teaches you to get out of your comfort zone and challenge what you thought of was possible. One of the needs of a human being is growth, and skydiving is a great way to express that. Another cool activity would have to be the Firewalk.

Mahon83050, I've tried skydiving. In fact, I had a fear of flying when I was younger and had never been in an airplane until that day. I would definitely recommend it. When you land on the ground, you feel on top of the world. You feel like you can do anything. It is a great confidence booster and makes all your everyday issues seem to go away.

I will tell you this though, when you are standing on the edge of the airplane getting ready to jump, it's pretty intense.

I say go for it! You can do a "tandem" jump, so you don't have to pay tons of money to go through the full course.

Also, try rockclimbing. I had a fear of heights, so I took up rockclimbing to cure it. Challenge your fears, or they will control you.

Just make sure you do your research and do not be reckless. Understand what you are doing and do it safely, well as safe as possible.

True. I felt the same away about public speaking. Waiting to go (in class) was terrorfying. You feel on top of the world when you are done, but then it is back to normal...so who knows.

Well, I probably won't do it anyway. If I had a bunch of friends who wanted to go...I would. Most people DON'T want to go skydiving.

Anyways, I went on this ride (tallest fastest roller coaster in the world) and enthusiasts compare it to an extreme sport...so good enough for me.

If you want to go skydiving, go skydiving. Don't make excuses about, go alone if you have to. Or take a date (though make sure she knows she has to pay, it's a little expensive).

No roller coaster in the world matches falling 140 mph at 14,000 feet up. Nothing really compares to it. As soon as you jump from that plane, you are a dead man. Your dead unless you do something about it (pull the rip cord). You are relying on equipment to save you. It does take courage, and I think you are a little different when you land (in a good way).

I thought it was more like speeds of 120mph, which makes the roller coaster actually faster.

I guess my point is: I was terrified of public speaking (I was so scared and terrified waiting to go, I wished I was dead) While I felt good about myself and confident, I did not have the feeling that I was fearless in everything.

I bet skydiving is the same way. You feel like the man when you are done and that feeling lasts for a few days. Then it is back to normal right?

I guess I should take up martial arts instead to deal what my fears are.

You're right, terminal velocity is about 120mph, however you can exceed that if you position your body and dive. Less resistance. Also, you are not strapped down as in a roller coaster. It actually feels like you are flying really, it's awesome. If I had the money/time, I probably take it up and get all the certifications.

The feeling does last a little while, and then it's back to normal. I guess that's why people get addicted to it, the adrenaline rush. For me, it was a huge accomplishment to over come a fear I had. That's what really changed me. From then on, if I found I was scared of something, I took it on and challenged that fear.

I bet if you went skydiving though, and right after went to a club to meet women, you would OWN the place.

Skydiving is overrated. You dont even get the falling sensation. Nothing scary about it whatsoever, except what people build up in their minds.

So am I... but after reading this thread, I'm kinda really wanting to go for it! It would be EXTREMELY thrilling (for me at least).

That being said, I wouldn't mind doing a static line jump from 3,000 feet (just like the paratroopers of WWII :)

However, New Jesey and the surrounding areas do not seem to offer that at all. I know as a first time jumper, one can do static line.

I thought about a static line jump, and that would be cool, but you get less of the freefall feeling. Like a poster above said, it doesn't really feel like you're falling, but like you are flying. However, I disagree by saying that it is definitely NOT over-rated.

Don't always be the one putting yourself out for her. Don't always be the one putting all the effort and work into the relationship. Let her, and expect her, to treat you as well as you treat her, and to improve the quality of your life.

Exactly!

It is what being a man is all about.

Yea, there is no freefall, but your stomach still probably still drops for atleast 2-3 seconds. The scary thing about the static line is that you are all by yourself.

No places in Jersey offer it for some reason.

I just joined a rockclimbing group off of meetup.com. Not in the same league as skydiving, but still out of that "comfort zone".
