Having lived in Mass for a while, I can attest that its inhabitants seem generally more miserable than in other states. The driving sucks, the taxes suck, the long cold winters suck...but they have had good sports teams in the last decade. The Sox are all the people in that area live for...

If I had to guess, I would say that people are happier in warmer states in general. I endured years and years of winter, and can safely say that when you are trapped inside for months at a time, year in and year out...it effects you in the worst kind of way. I could live the rest of my life without ever living through a new england winter ever again.

Interesting that the top ten happy states are mostly red states and the most the bottom ten are blue states. Wonder why that is? Ignorance is bliss? ;)

I have to say I though California would be higher with our great weather, beaches and activities.

I think it's more ignorant to live in a state with terrible weather and soaring tax rates, i.e., the bottom ten.

You gotta pay for all the good stuff thus (high cost of living = stress) and let's not forget the high unemployment rate and the state going bankrupt in a year.

I'm in NJ and I'd definitely say this is true. It's no surprise that the warmer southern states and sparse western states are much higher than icy, wintry, crammed NJ.

Check out blog.okcupid.com the newest post has lots of nifty slider charts that show how unhappy those 'better educated' states seem to be overall.

The "less educated" states are generally more religious; religion brings people peace of mind.

Nevada is one of the foreclosure centers in the USA from what I read. The real state market went to hell. I'm sure all this has something to do with it.
That can't be it because Arizona is right there with us in terms of foreclosures. We both had the fastest growth rates in the country for a period of time so not surprising we both got hit hard when the housing bubble burst.
