I had a home invasion, and i pointed my shotgun at the guys face. He moved in quicker than lightning and pointed the barrel away from him and we wrestled over it while his buddy was punching me in the face. Barely escaped with my life.


Im no fighter or anything, but after that I firmly believe a handgun is superior for in home defense. Shotguns are great, but if its TOO close in range, they can be taken/pointed away easily. Any hesitation, like what I did, could cost you your life. I (and the assailant for that matter) got very lucky that day.

Like Tyteeyes said, a 1911 or a glock is a great choice. I bought a Llama .45 the day after my home invasion incident. They are not reputable guns, but it was dirt cheap, it shoots straight, and doesnt jam after a hundred rounds.

Dont trust anything with a long barrel for home defense.

well maybe if you werent such a puzzy you would have blew his head off and made his friend run out the door instead of almost being overpowered and murdered in your own home.

Yeah he would've pulled some superstar heroics like guys do on the range, against unmoving paper targets, while wearing earmuffs, in broad daylight surrounded by buddies and safety staff.

Getting up alone at 4am to confront an uncertain threat you're still sleep-f*cked is a different story. The problem isn't that a shotgun isn't too long but you need to have a plan "in case of home invasion", etc, that can be carried out when you're not 100%. House geometry and corners are part of that plan, if its too constricted you'll know BEFORE you get to the point where you're wrestling over a gun for your life.

It's the person behind the gun that is always the most important factor

As a Lance Corporal with the 1st Marines, I breached hundreds of homes with a good ol Mossberg 500 in my hands.

Obviously, most rifles (with the highly tactical exceptions) are unwieldy indoors, and most people freak out and shoot all over the place if they have a handgun. If you don't have military training and discipline with firearms, you are more likely to shoot yourself than any intruder.

Take it from the Marines, shotguns are the way to go for close quarters.

What do you think about the remington 870 maritime magnum, if you've had a chance to put some rounds through one? my father has one, he's debating selling it now (doesn't shoot anymore), and I'm considering buying it off him.

I've never shot that specific model, but the 870 is a classic, and the nickel finish of the marine magnum makes for better cleaning and less corrosion issues. Its 6+1 shell capacity and barrel length make it a perfect home defense weapon, and you could probably shoot clays with it too. Throw in the fact that you can choke it to suit sport shooting, and it gets a from me.

Plus it's probably better than anything you'll find at a pawn shop, and you'll get the best price from dad.

There are many considerations with a CC. For instance, if you carry it into a place where alcohol is sold, and you are caught with it, you're going to prison. There's just too many strings with the CC, plus I don't need a gun to go krogering.

There aren't that many strings attached. There are certain places you can't carry (federal buildings, schools, bars etc) and you must keep it concealed - what's so difficult about that?

And then there's the auto laws...even though you may be licensed to carry a gun on your person, if you are caught with it in your vehicle (obvious if you are going to carry it), there are a litany of contradictory gun laws regarding vehicles. Like, you have to keep any bullets "well out of arm's reach", in which case to follow the letter of the law, your gun becomes a paperweight if the bullets are in the trunk.

I'm not sure what laws you're referring to. As long as it's concealed, I can have it loaded and within an arm's reach. Florida is good about giving its citizens the right to protect themselves.

It's just a whole lot of BS to carry one in public, but any malicious individuals on my farm will get blown away.

sup guys, i'm the proud new owner of a mossberg shotgun. turns out assault weapons rule only applied to rifles.

anyways, it's gonna take me longer to get the handgun, but i have a badass shotgun now. i feel safer already. gonna head to the range this weekend

Those two grips let you shoot the gun from your hip. To help with accuracy, and to complete the most intimidating gun I have ever held, I added a laser sight. Yes, a laser sight on a shotgun - my idea was that I wanted to shoot .00 buck shells, which from across a typical room have a shot pattern of only about six inches. It is actually very easy to miss.

Personal favorite for home defense is a Smith and Wesson 1911 .45. Carry a Glock 19 in my vehicle. When the nasty dudes invade the US, I'll be opening the safe in the garage and retrieving a DPMS M4 in .223 with an EOTECH holographic sight and Surefire lighting system on it. Before they sneak into my neighborhood, I'll be picking them off with a DPMS .308 from one of my balconies. If I run out of ammo, then there's two German Shepherds to be dealt with. Hope the bad guys don't bring dog treats since that's my last line of defense (unless I can find a few Claymores).
