Graveyard shift

Hey guys,

Hey guys, I just wanted to get your thoughts on this job offer (without going too in-depth).

* Working the graveyard shift (11-7am, but if I can work faster, it'll finish faster).
* Paid per delivery (1.15) plus flat bonus 15. Can reasonably pace myself at (23-30 deliveries/hr).
* # of deliveries differ per day (80<X<150).

Also, how many of you were able to hold down a night-time, part-time job while attending uni? Keeping in mind I'm doing a pretty full-on degree (medical radiation science). I've never had to work at night before and was worried in regards to how this would affect my study habits/routine.

edit: example of pay rate. 80 parcels. 20 parcels delivered/hour. pay rate 1.15 per parcel. 15 bonus.
80x1.15=92+15=107.
107/4.5 (30 minutes loading stock onto truck) = 23.80

20 parcel/hr is delivering @ a laid back pace. I'd imagine If i hauled ass and got used to everything, 25+ parcels an hour would be achievable.

Are you able to give it a test run before you commit? See how your body pulls up, and if you can handle it, go for it.

Yeah, I'm on trial run for 4 nights. First night was a breeze.

The money isn't bad right? It's definitely not a slackers job. Need to finish things asap to keep my rate up.

Wish I could just find a well paying part time, day job. Heh.

Get a job in security, pays well and you sit around doing nothing (i.e. you can study).

I've done night work once in my life and I think I lost a few years of my life doing it I was so worn out. It was ok for a week or two, then I felt it, and as the months wore on, it got worse. Most people say you can either do it or you can't, I think I was one that can't. I have a cousin that does it, and he said it took him 2 years to get used to it.

Don't I need some certificate or training to do security work?

I'm only working 2 nights a week, probably 1 during my semester cause I don't want it messing with my studies.

2nd night of training was pretty brutal though, I'm def not a night owl as I need my sleep and sleeping in till 11-12pm after a shift makes me feel like a lazy bast@rd. I just kept thinking, 'why the fck am I here?!' but... money.

I think I'll give it a month or so or until something better turns up. It'll suck to just go after the employer spent so much time training me though.

I have worked in a servo before doing the graveyard shift a couple of years ago. Paid about $24/hour. Not too much work required either.

I work overnite a couple times a month at a nursing home right now. It really slows you down and if you aren't disciplined about it you will really lose your way. I worked last nite 7A to 7P (I get 28 an hour for overnite btw) and came home and slept until 12. After getting up and bull****ting with the GF for a little while and cooking lunch I fell asleep again from 3 to 7. Now despite my rest I am in a halfassed awake mode where I don't want to do anything but watch TV and type out badly worded sentences on sosuave. And I won't be able to sleep tonite either.

Graveyard shift is really only for the freaks and the truly disciplined. I hope you are trying it out while you aren't in class since it can mess your schedule up.

Security you will probably need a certificate yes, but so what, it is not hard. Do a little more now so you can earn more and do something that will work alongside your studies.

Got another month and a bit till studies start again so I'll keep looking for a 'dayjob,' while working this job for the money.

I'd get a security cert but I don't have the money to get one atm.

I fully understand what you mean about the sleep though, felt like that after the first day. Need to really push myself to keep moving during the day.
