Ha! Wait til you try it, you'll learn to loathe the bugle which wakes you up, and the half-asleep scramble to get fallen in on time, and how bloody CHEERFUL the officer-instructors are at 5am in the freezing cold. Oh, such fond memories have I of the academy..

Your coach seems just as clueless as many I've come across, training the same muscle back-to-back and stuff.
The job would be fine if it was in the morning on an empty stomach, perfect for battling bodyfat, however if it's just before your weights workout I'd be inclined to think it'd use up unnecessary glycogen which COULD have been put to use shifting weight.. depends on the fitness of the individual of course, for some, a mile run is just a walk in the park.
