Got a Drink Thrown at Me

I was doing my nightime sarging at this bar when I came across this 3 set (1 guy and 2 chicks). The guy I already knew so I did not need any opener to start chatting with them. So as I am in, the guy is teasing the HB8 about her weight. He was saying that she is so fat that she can barely fit her ass on the bar stool. Then he asks me what I think. Now to avoid appearing as a Nice Guy, I decided to throw in a Neg. I said maybe she should join a gym. Now everybody in the group started laughing and she got so pissed that she threw her drink at me. I leave pretty soon afterwards and tell the guy that he should send that girl to Anger Management. I do not want to overanalyze the situation, but would love to hear how I could have handled this situation better.

I guess it was funny to them because I was an outsider and I kinda validated their teasing of her being fat. Now before that comment I did not have a chance to say anything to the girl and I was hoping that the neg will lead me somewhere if she hadn't acted so negative about it.

That wasn't a neg, it was an insult. Her friend was teasing her, so I would have said something the opposite like a compliment on her clothes. Or better yet, negged your mate.
