I'm kind of a cologne nut, so here is what I've used. These colognes have gotten the most favorable comments from women.

"Polo Blue"
"Joop"
"Chrome"
"L'eau D'Issey"
"Desire Blue"

My personal favorite is "Chrome". In my opinion, it has a nice "soapy" scent that's not overpowering. It's also quite cost effective.

is it good to go with old classics that girls know or new smells that girls haven't heard of yet?

Dolce y Gabana is great
Chrome Azzaro is great
Eternity by Calvin Klein

eh I own Chrome and Eternity but want Dolce and Gabana, I've smelled some pretty good ones but other than that, I have no idea.

Xeryus. Might have to buy it online, not many stores carry it. Atleast it's that way around here.

O.K. Im gonna break it down nice and easy. These are all you will need.
"Spark" by Liz Claiborne(Casual)
"Chrome" By Arazzo(Casual or Evening)
"Allure" by Chanel(Hands down the best I have ever smelt)
"Boss In Motion" by Hugo Boss(Daytime only, citrusy)
"Design for Him" by Paul Sebastain(sp?),"Raw Vanilla" by Coty and "Curve Crush",these three are my "junkers" sort of speak as I dont wear them on dates because I have plenty better but they are good for a change of pace.

My friend has some Arabic cologne he brought back from Jordan, that stuff is amazing!

I was thinking about getting Allure last weekend. Never smelt it, someone told me it was great though. Now I'm seeing here. Probably pick it up tomorrow.
