Yes it works but you have to walk away. I did the same thing with a truck a few years ago. I think they wanted 5k, it was too much, so I lowballed since it was xmas and I knew they would want money. I left my card when I left and they wouldn't take it. It was on a commission and I told him to call them and see if they'll take it they said no.

A week later, they counter offered very close to my offer and I said, sorry you took a little too long, I just bought something else yesterday. The point is, you have to not coming across as needing it. Supply & demand my friends.
