There's two herpes simplex viruses (and, for completeness, I'll say there are actually eight human herpes viruses- chicken pox/shingles for instance is HSV-3). HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both can affect any area of the body.

Though HSV-1 is mainly on the face.

HSV-2 is commonly called genital herpes. Guess why.

But both can affect other areas (don't think it's common though).


One other thing to say is that the vast majority of cases (90%??) are asymptomatic. It's likely many of us already have oral herpes and just don't get cold sores.

However the general advice still stands:

If in doubt wrap your weener.
