You DO realize that without those ads, YouTube wouldn't exist, right?

even with adblock i get ads sometimes, but yeah its mostly effective
Right click your ad-block icon. There is a marker that says "Allow some non-intrusive advertising". Uncheck it.

I've never had a single ad on youtube or facebook for almost 2 years.

Maybe you don't remember the old youtube.

Fewer ads. Ads didn't start at the beginning of videos. Ads didn't interrupt you several times through your video.

Oh also, on youtube your videos load on slower servers. Your video can be lagging/buffering but the servers the ads are on are top-notch which is why you always get that perfectly loaded high quality advertisement, and then you get the actual video which has to buffer at times.

Luckily until this thread was brought up, I completely forgot about youtube ads.

The ads on youtube actually have the opposite of the desired effect on me. They make me NOT want to buy what they advertise. I'm sick of being force-fed stupid advertisements everywhere I turn. I miss the old days where you had no video advertisements. At most you might have the occasional banner at the top of the page you can choose to click on if you wanted. As usual, when corporations buy something, they have to screw with it and ruin a good thing. Ad-free videos were nice.

p.s. Someone should come up with a website that is basically YouTube back in 2007. Exactly the same layout with only banner ads and no video ads. It would make money only if someone chose to click a banner at the top, instead of the crappy video ads and pop-ups. Even better would be no ads at all. Strictly donation based.

YouTube back then was losing money. They only reason they existed was because they were expecting future revenues from advertising.

Ever since Yahoo hit it big back during the dot com boom, all startups (like YouTube) always have their eye on hitting it big, so they can get plenty of ad revenues in the future.

So, in order for somebody to "come up" with a huge, free video sharing site, your basically asking for some anonymous mega rich person or corporation to build a site JUST SO people won't have to look at ads.

as nice as that would be, it's pretty much against the laws of economics or human nature.

I was thinking something along the lines of how Wikipedia is. Donation-based and no ads. The owner wouldn't get rich but he could make a living.

"Before being purchased by Google, YouTube declared that its business model was advertisement-based, making 15 million dollars per month." (Google purchased Youtube 2006)

"Google does not provide detailed figures for YouTube's running costs, and YouTube's revenues in 2007 were noted as "not material" in a regulatory filing.[62]"

"Some industry commentators have speculated that YouTube's running costs—specifically the bandwidth required—may be as high as 5 to 6 million dollars per month,[64] "

From reading around it seems like Youtube started hitting its unprofitable patch somewhere around 2009-10.

Edit: Upon reading around it seems that a lot of stuff from those years was just pure speculation as google never releases the full numbers. But you seem like you know better than I do so I'll take your word for it.

But interestingly, I found a business insider article from 2007 that said "YouTube has spent months testing different ad formats to figure out which models wouldn't alienate its viewers. It found that viewers abandon videos that include pre-roll ads at a rate of more than 70%, so it ditched pre-roll commercials."

Kinda ironic how nowadays, the most annoying ads Youtube delivers today are pre-roll commecials. Ad-block plus blocks those too..

I actually have zero idea how much or even if YouTube, as a separate business model from Google, is making money.

I just know that there's literally hundreds of other video sharing sites (meta cafe, daily motion, etc), but YouTube is still far and away the biggest piece of the online video pie.

So despite how annoying their ads are, the masses still consider YouTube as the "go to" spot to watch and upload vids.

But I'm pretty sure that if they outlawed online advertising, (or if for some reason EVERYBODY started using adblock) then plenty of popular sites would change significantly or vanish altogether.

It's one of those necessary evils, I guess. (Don't forget that Google, who owns YouTube was allegedly funded by the CIA and now fully supports the NSA).

As an aside, I remember as a kid, my dad would fly into a murderous rage whenever a commercial came on Cable TV.

"What the f%$# are they showing $#%@! commercials for goddamnit! I'm already paying for this $%%^%$#!!!"

2 predictions for YouTube: First, they will create a defense against adblock. Second, they will remove the "Skip this Ad" link.
