I started running about 2 months ago, I used to hate it (my best mile time in HS was like 12 min) and when I started again I couldnt finish a mile without walking some of it, but now my fastest mile is 7.10, and a 7.30 average on single miles.

Just this week I started running more than 1 mile at a time, I ran 2 miles non-stop in about 16.30 on monday night, ran 1 mile lastnight and I just got back from running 3.1 miles non-stop in 27 min. Thats definately a distance and time record for me.

I was wondering what other people's times were, and I want to run a 5k race (3.1 miles), from what I hear 27 min is a respectable time, especially for a beginner.

Its getting easier to run, I'm 6'2" 198 lbs, I used to be 240 lbs i'm really getting into it.

When I started running 4 years ago my 5k time was 31 minutes. Now my best is 16:22, but I run 6 days of the week, every week. You'll notice significant speed improvements your first year or so of training (if you continue to run consistantly), but the improvements will start to slow down as you get faster.

When I first started I was 227 pounds at 6'2". Now I am 172 at 6'2".

Damn I hate running. I only do it because I have to do my roadwork for boxing. I am not sure about times for competing in running but those times are pretty good already. Havent timed myself in a long time, but last I remember I ran 2kms in about 8 minutes or something like that. 1 mile = 1.6 kms, we use differnet measurements here in Australia.

Other than that I only do sprints, I run about 12 seconds for the 100m, cant beleive how some of these dudes can break the 10 sec mark, fukc they must be fast!

Keep up the running, cardio work is really good for your day to day well being!

I like to run.
I always do 1.6 miles when I run, because that's exactly 10 laps of running track at my university.

Scaled down to one mile, I think my time is something like 6:55.
I'm 5'9, 140 lbs.

Personally I like to run and swim and montain biking and break dancing. I NEVER lift weight, just think it's too boring.
So it looks like I only go for the cardios, and my American friends all think I'm a weaklin based on my "size"...... until they find out how many push-up and pull ups I can do and all the break moves I know...
:D
I'm not in anyway dissing my friends who go to the weight room three times a week to get bigger so they can get the ladies...

i used to be a pretty good runner - more long distance than sprinting, i used to be able to run 1.6 kilometres in around 5 1/2 minutes. i have also run a 14 kilometre fun run in about 60 minutes before. i have become pretty unfit in the past few years but i'm going to slowly start getting fitter again. i'm watching what i eat now and i am walking about 1 hour each day and using some weights that i have at home and doing a few other exercises now. I have only just started so there is really any major improvements yet but there will be soon.

I'm a decent runner. I was better in the past, before college, I'm sorry to say. I went into the Army Reserve right after high school, and my best 2 mile time during basic training was 13:45. Now (after lots of take-out food from 2 years of college :( ) my workouts are a little slower, but I can still run decently. The last time I ran the two mile on a flat course (I normally run closer to 3 miles on a hilly course) I had a time of 15:10, which isn't bad and passes the Army Physical Fitness Test run time by 46 seconds.

we all know there are advantages and disadvantages of treadmill running...i prefer treadmills to outdoor running because my time, pace, and speed are all in front of me...i find it easier to cheat when i'm running outside without true knowledge of my speed...

an article in men's health magazine stated that treadmill running doesnt mimic true running well because in treadmill running, you are basically raising your legs and letting the ground move underneath...

the way to correct this is to have your treadmill, at least, on a 2% incline to closely mimic real world running...

Whats the best way to increase your speed? I'm not concerned about long distance, just short distance sprints basically.

What do you think a good program would be for a guy who only wants to run 3 days a week but wants to improve in terms of 5-K times?

I would be happy doing sprints one of the days of the week as well. I can't do them that often though, because they kick my butt.

Welcome to the world of endorphines.

I used to enjoy running, then I started weights. It wasnt quite as good to begin with.. then I started intense training, got introduced to squats, then shortly after deadlifts.. a whole new world of endorphine, lol

Have you thought about a bit of weight training too, Iguana? :)
