At the bare minimum I have lived just fine on £80/month ($150).

Which bought me lots of eggs, ham/turkey slices, bread, bacon and cheap ready meals for the main meal.

It's not ideal and certainly not if you workout - I spend a rediculous ammount on food these days.

I live in the middle of NYC, and food prices are inflated... lets put it somewhere between $300 - 500... its ridiculous

I live cheap. I eat decent. I'm really only lacking on fresh produce. And maybe red meat. And as a busy full time student/full time employ who lifts and does numerous endurance athletics, meal preperation time and cost is very important.

$4.50 - 5 dozen eggs. I eat up to 12/day. Lasts about a week. 6g protien per.

$.50 - can of lowgrade tuna. I eat 3-6 per day. 33g protien per can.

$1.58 - 1 loaf of Granny's Delight Whole Grain Fiber Bread. A very healthy bread with each slice containing 6g fiber. Very important. I eat 4-8 slices a day.

$4.70 - 10 pound bag of chicken quarters. If I'm short on time I'll just through them in a pot and boil them. Takes about ten minutes to de-skin and the just wait. Lasts about 2 days.

$.70/pound - Whole chicken (about $2.50-4.00). Just pull the skin off and throw it in the oven at your preference. Sometimes I'll do 200F for 6-8 hours or 375F for 1-2 hours.

$1.50 - 1 pound bag of frozen stirfry veggies. Add some chicken if you want.

On the weekends I'll buy redmeat. Usually something cheap ($1.50-$2.50 per pound).

Also smoothies are cheap. Just throw some ice, yogurt, a banana (or strawberries or whatever), and some all natural peanut butter in the blender and viola! It's cheap ($1.00?), easy, healthy, and fills you up for a while.

OF course, if you don't have any dietary needs (no weightlifting, or slow metabolism, or care about health, etc...)you can live cheaper on roman noodles, PbJ, chefboyardee, etc...

$100 may be pushing eat. $150 is more realistic.

Chicken nuggetts(the kind you heat in the oven) and french fries cost like 12 bucks for a weeks supply :p Grab some pasta and some soup and some bread for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and you can live for 100 bucks a month :p

Im not recommending this but I have done it when I have needed to.

another good idea is chick peas and beans.

I saw em about 80c per can at Walmart where I live.

buy a can of each for less than 2 dollars, add a little italian salad dressing, shake and you have bean salad. full of fibre, carbs and protein :)

good few portions too. the bean salad yielded above is probably enough for 2 meals.

Santa's worst nightmare! :)

I'd say if you live alone and have pressures of student life then 300-500 bucks a month is a realistic figure.

If you wanna go medieval and eat beans, oatmeal and potatoes - then sure - you'll probably survive on 50 bucks a month or so. I can't do it though

I think I spend like 20 dollars a month on food. Just enough to get a snack or something. My primary job is at the MGM Grand so I get free food there whenever I'm at work, which is alot. My secondary job promoting puts me in good standings with like 6 or 7 other casinos on S. Las Vegas Blvd so I get full access to their EDR's as well.

on a side note one of the girls i'm seeing pays for dinner everytime we go out so I get to eat for free then too!:D

I buy a new bottle of liquor every now and again...when I don't get a free one from work. I love my life.

good thread.

Everyone who lives on their own post exactly everything they ate yesterday.

Especially killa cause your thread makes it sound like you eat 24/7!

Does alchohol count ??

If it does, I gotta tack on about 200$ for brews...

Food and Alchohol puts me around 800 - 900$/month

well back in my very cheap heyday... the early mid 90's... my target goal per month on food was 25$ per month.. and my reccord was 12$... how?
bake every day
( grew my own yeast-most spendy ingredient)
vegetable garden
everything from scratch
buy NOTHING premade or processed
only buy things on sale, be opportunistic
change food with the seasons
of course this is a possible only if you have the time, the will and the ability
