If you pay attention to what is going on around you, you will have a lot longer than one second to do something about the danger.

Some men do the 40 yd dash in 4.0 seconds, guys, from a dead stop.
Current NFL players must feel lucky that these men you speak of don't play football, seeing how Chris Johnson's 4.24 40yd from a 3-point stance was one of the fastest in recent years

Believe it or not, the fastest football players are actually found at the high school level, not the NFL. The sample size is much greater, and the required bulking up a player does to survive the NFL will make anyone just a little bit slower, as compared to their skinny high school selves.

I played in high school against a kid who ran a 4.0 - and after trying to chase him around the field, I believe it. He still holds the state record for punt returns for TD. I was there to help him break the record by being completely unable to catch him. He went to the #1 college in the country at the time, but ended up quitting because he was just a fvckup.

No way man, I can't dig that.

First, I think the importance of size in football is way overestimated by most people. A player with top-end speed but no size/strength WILL be used on the field somehow, and his speed will be taken advantage of as much as possible. A player with top-end size and strength (we'll remove o-line and gap pluggers for this discussion) who can't move, simply won't be on the field.

Trindon Holliday is 5'5", 170 lb. Wes Welker, Desean Jackson, Antoine Winfield, Steve Smith...some of these guys could have at one time or another be considered in the top one or two tiers at their positions, yet none of them are over 185 lb., which I'm sure you know is squirt-gun size in NFL terms. Darren Sproles too is small.

My high school state championship football team one year included a 5'4" or so 135lb noseguard.

I think most estimates and caclulations of what Usain Bolt's 40-yd time would be are around 4.1, but definitely not under 4.0.

I have little to no doubt that your guy clocked a 4.0. But I can almost guarantee you that when he ran that 4.0, it was timed manually, not with electric sensors as used in the NFL combine. I believe several NFL and college players have clocked sub-4.0 times with manual timings.

I think your point about sample size is moot (just because any player with such high caliber speed will easily be a standout in high school football, leading to strong college recruiting and even NFL scouting just on the basis of that raw speed alone), but I'll admit your point about players slowing down when they bulk up had me thinking.

Ultimately I still don't see any validity in your claim though. High school players may be smaller and skinnier, but speed, even straight-line speed, is something that is improved through training. Maximizing one's speed requires the perfection of running technique too. A high school player who has the time, dedication, discipline, and maturity to sustain a training regimen that is on par with that of an NFL player must be extremely, extremely rare. I honestly think the demands and responsibilities of being a speed player in the NFL that require such intensive training outweigh the losses due to increased size that you speak of. I don't mean to say every or even a maority of NFL players work hard in the off-season like they're supposed to, but we have guys like Larry Fitzgerald and Matt Forte who clearly bust their @$$es religiously even though they've already "made it" bigtime. Plus, we're talking about the cream of the crop here, so the lazy fwckers don't matter.

Still, I'll admit that would be interesting to ask guys like Devin Hester and Desean Jackson whether they think they were faster in high school or in the NFL.

bs, crap can 'jump off' a LOT faster than you lazy f**cks THINK it can. that's just your bs excuse for not doing the WORK required in becoming a black belt and a truly fast ccw draw with the pistol. MANY people have been standing in line, at bank, restaurant, sitting in a bar, etc, and suddenly had a weapon drawn or brawl start, etc.

Again, if you pay attention to what is going on around you, you'll see the signs that something bad is about to happen. If you aren't paying attention, then you are an idiot.

bs, I've had it happen out of a clear blue sky, just walking down the street. several times, in fact, adn i am a big, strongman, known to often carry a pistol and be good with it . I've had a dog just suddenly go from sniffing at my hand to biting at my crotch, he stopped becaue I snatched out a .22 iver johnson .22 revolver, and I mean swiftly!this was in 1969, I was 17, but I alread had 1000 or more hours working on the fast draw and as many more on the ccc (c oncealed fast draw). Most people can see something comingh 3 seconds away and they STILL can't handle it. :)
