Fish oils slow down muscle degregation.

The fish oil capsules I take are 1200mg and have over 700mg of Omega-3 per capsule.

How many capsules should I take a day I have been taking up to 6 to 8 per day and wonder if that is enough?

10g of fish oil as a minimum.. most would do best on 30g (or two tablespoons) for optimum benefits and health.

OK how many mg does it take to make a gram?

I have a hunch I might not be taking enough but I do eat fish and get the omega-3 from other sources.

you're getting in just about enough for the minimum

milli is a prefix meaning 10^-3 or 1/1000 or .001.

Therefore, one milligram is one onethousdanth of a gram. 1000 milligrams make one gram.

Thanks Alex, that is good to know at least now I might up it a bit.

I have been taking fish oil for years and the benefits of taking them is excellent.

i don't think americans knew what metric was when he was in elementary school. metric resistance has shifted from active to passive in more recent years.

:eek: Whoa, thats like 30 pills a day. Are you speaking from experience, or are there any studies that show 30g is optimal?

Charles Poliquin recommends 45g fish oil a day.

Yes that's a lot of pills. Try fish oil in liquid form (with lemon taste):
-PFO pure fish oil
-Carlson Fish oil

I take 30-45g of the PFO pure fish oil (2-3 tablespoons). It tastes like lemonade.

The theory behind these "huge amount" of fish oil, is that cavemen used to eat everything: brains, inside of bones,... All this is full of omega 3.

For an athlete, I'd say 30g a day as a minimum to ensure the o3:eek:6 ratio isn't disrupted and get in DHA/EPA.

If you don't work out you can get away with less.

****, i've been taking 1g a day, was wondering why i wasn't seeing any benifits, do you recommend buying a bottle and just gulping it down every day to get the 30g? Is the know dosage limits where as it becomes too much? what are the health benifits you have noticed of long term use?

So many questions, but every time i search on the net i just get some crap product being sold that come in pill form and can't find the proper info.

I would have guess experience >=D

Charles Poloquin makes some pretty ridiculous supplement claims. He also sells the supplements he recommends. I always take everything he says related to supplements with a grain of salt.

I don't like some of Poliquin's training advice (it pertains more to athletes than guys trying to get significantly bigger) but his nutrition advice is generally spot on. He's not the only guy selling fish oil and BCAAs (his favourites) so I can't see how that's an issue.

I do not find his supplement recommendations ridiculous at all.
