As far as Kitten's Ex's Audi's ECU going out repeatedly, that is not at all common on Audis. If it happened more than once then there was probably something hinky in the wiring harness that was causing the brain to fry, which sometimes happens with cars, but it's no more likely to happen in one brand over any other.

I had my S4 for 6 months and I never had to spend a cent fixing anything, and I drove that car like I'd stolen it. Although, I've never once had my RX-7 break down either in the almost three years that I've owned her, which goes against the laws of nature, so maybe I'm just incredibly lucky.
he didnt have it long enough for anything to happen but the guy who bought it from him experienced the brain going out. he fixed it and spent a ton to do it and then sold it too so i dont know what happened to it after that. was glad it wasnt our problem.
we had a mazda rx7 and it never gave us trouble. we also had a mazda 626 and i ran that car ragged and it never stopped running no matter what stupid things i did to it.

Those wrx/evo often have much more than stock hp/tq running through those transmissions. We are talking 40-140 crank hp/tq over stock. If you shift like a clown, you are much more likely to destroy a tranny. A lot of guys also drag/ track their cars.

Audi's tend to have problems a few years later. Electrical in nature. Few Audi's tend to get chipped, so most are at stock hp levels. Fantastic interiors though. I have 3 friends who just always seem to have their A4s in the shop.

I never had a problem with my stage1 (260 crank hp) WRX over 40K miles.

Anyway, why not just get nice front wheel drive Honda? very reliable, good mpg, good resale.

I'm thinking of chipping my car, but first I want to see how it drives without the chip and decide if I really need it.

I have heard of one friend of a friends whose Audi was always in the shop, yet I have another friend whos owned half a dozen Audis and loves them (his were totalled, not broken down).

Also, I really want AWD. Where I live, if its winter and you don't have AWD you aren't going anywhere.

why are you recommending a WRX/evo/any other high hp car? for your first car seriously just get something good on gas mileage because your gonna crash it or damage it, unless your parents pay for everything then your not gonna be able to afford full coverage every month. Drive the **** out of the car for about a year, then look for something nice. If yoru the same way as me though, your not gonna listen to this advice and go ahead and buy something nice anyways...and your also gonna end up getting in a wreck sometime within the first year.

Haters, shut your holes. Quit telling him to get a craphole of a car. It ain't his fault you're jealous cuz you never got a nice car at that age. If he's got the financial means, then he should by all means have at it!

NewGuy, those are some damn good prices for a nice car. If you get it, definitely get an intake and exhaust just for the sound - I used to work at a VW dealer that had a 2001 Audi A4 2.8 stock, and I couldn't stand the sound - it was extraordinarily bland and muffled. I've heard the same engine fully modded with turbos thouh, and it sounded absolutely incredible. Make it roar!

So, you want a backseat, AWD, and privacy in one car eh?

That calls for an SUV!!! Yukon, Denali, Explorer, 4 Runner, Land Cruiser, Land Rover, etc!

And if you wanna race it, you can drop it a few inches, put a spoiler on the tail, and a Type R Logo on the door ;)

Eminence...I was not suggesting getting a wrx or Evo. I was just correcting a wrong assumption about transmission failures is NOT due to poor quality components rather the real issue is overtaxing stock component with power or using bad technique. A stock 2002 WRX is a quick car, not a fast one. Now a cobb stage 2 WRX is pretty fast.

I highly doubt that if he can only afford a 9K for car, that he could afford the insurance on a 'high performance' car. I say this as I believe he is an inexperienced young driver in terms of insurance rating.

I do agree that you should go for a cheaper, safer, slower car that is reliable. Most likely due to driver inexperience he will get into an accident, as most of did when we just really started. I know I did. It happens.

Chipping really changes the whole drivability of a turbo motor if done by a good tuning company.

My 2003 WRX was chipped by Cobb tuning to stage 1 levels 227 to 260 hp. I really changed the whole dynamics of the car, much greater drivability due to much more torque under 3K rpms. Better gas mileage and much easier to drive with the AC.

My current WRX STi has a Cobb flashed ECU 300 hp to 325 hp, but more importantly more torque 300 to 340. I can notice a difference in gear 4/5/6 for sure. I can't wait to add a downpipe to make it a Cobb stage 2, as I heard that makes the STi into a monster.

Oh, I could have gotten a BMW 325, but I chose the STi for its performance and unique quality. The Females like the pretty color, lol.

Again, I'm 30+. I would suggest, get decent car now, then upgrade in the future. I would upgrade the driver with some performance driving classes. You will be a faster driver by taking high performace driving class, and even get a discount on your car insurance in the process. Mod the driver first, then the car.

cheers, j
