when someone grabs your foot?

From what I've learned in MMA so far, a good way to keep your opponent at base is to throw the front kick. Now let's put that in a real life situation. When you're being attacked or in a fight, unskilled fighters would just try to rush at you throwing arms, and if you just happened to get backed into a corner or a wall and are unable to dodge/sidestep the attack i know you could either try to hit a vital point such as the groin or throw the front kick to create some distance. But what if they grab your foot when you kick? You're left hopping around until they complete their counter.

Is there a way to counter or get out of that position once in it? Should you just drop to the floor and get in defense position (on your back with your feet in the air ready to kick the opponent in the shin, etc...) then roll out or is there a better technique?

My style in a streetfight would be not to throw a kick. If your going to kick, kick below the knees. I don't recommend kicking when in the standup position. Unless you have those great muy thai kicks. I think it is better to throw punches because they are quicker strikes. My grappling game is good. So in a street fight I would use my strength. I would fake a kick low (like royce gracie used to do in early ufc days) or I would fake a jab.

I would then get into a clinch- double underhooks-take fight to the ground-then mount-then punches and elbows.

If you get your foot caught best thing to do is try and get a good hold on opponent and balance on one foot. Then straighten leg out, or take the fight to the ground. If the guy is inexperienced you could probably catch him in a guillotine.

If a guy comes rushing at you, GOOD. Most unskilled fighters won't have a huge amount of power anyway and as long as you keep your chin down, arms in, and hands up close to your face, damage should be minimal. When he gets in though, you should immediately go for a clinch. By taking away distance, you've taken away his power.

Once in the clinch, pull his head down, step back with your right foot, and throw a knee. Your left foot now in front, still have him clinched, and drive your left foot BACK now, at the same time pulling him down to the ground. You could roll him over to his back now and get onto the knee on stomach position and proceed to punish him.

Key point is to make sure your clinch is tight. Where his neck goes, his body has to go.

If you throw kicks, throw low ones. They're quicker and can do a lot of damage if you strike the right area under the right angle. But in every streetfight (not to mention that they should be avoided like hell because they're dumb) you should be primarily concerned with not being hurt and ending the fight as soon as possible.

I've never been in a serious "real" fight before (and I hope I never am), but I've been doing BJJ training for about 8 months now. When someone goes for a takedown on me and gets 1 leg, I hop around on 1 foot while I try to free the trapped leg, if I know I'm about to go down, I attempt a guillotine or triangle choke, since they usually have 1 arm between my legs and 1 arm outside. If that doesn't work, I try to go to regular guard or half guard. If I have to be on the bottom, I'd rather be in guard than side control or the mount.

I've also been incorporating a lot of 1 leg exercises in my workout routine lately (pistol squats, 1 leg Romanian deadlifts, etc). These really help in avoiding takedowns, they make your balance a lot stronger and make it easier to free the trapped leg.

I do mma, jujitsu, judo, wrestling etc. Took 1st in my div in a tourny for grappling a couple of weeks ago.

When someone picks your ankle or leg the best thing you can do is try to slam your leg back down to the ground to get your base again. If i am over them I wll sprawl back and be over them on the ground.

Generally when someone has your ankle or leg its bad news for you. If what you're describing is a frontkick, you'll have a lot of power to slam it down if he catches the ankle.

If they catch your leg, thats a good thing! As his guard will be down. Bend your knee out to the side to close the distance, either go in for clinch while standing on one leg or throw punches and elbows to the unprotected face. Both ways in my experiance he will let go. Also if its a one handed catch you can roll your ancle out.

Always avoid going to the ground in a street fight.

Some very interesting answers. Yea I know if I can avoid it, then do so. My MMA coach is Charlie Cassis so he does incorporate alot of kicks. I know how to use low kicks and where to kick, but it's just been in my mind that if I do feel the need to throw a front kick to create distance then my foot may end up in my enemy's/attacker's hands and how would i counter that.

My grappling is not that great since while I was taking my MMA classes we did not focus much on it, during my last few classes we started to get into it. So as far as close combat grapples I don't really know any other than the basic takedown to different mounts, how to counter a front tackle, and a few ground submissions like an armbar and another one that deals with the leg of your opponent. I forgot the name.

I was thinking, when I start working I'll go back to my MMA but also start taking BJJ for grapple training. So 3 days of MMA and 2 days of BJJ.
