I don't think it's possible unless you let her know from the start that you won't be her crying pillow. You also have to remind her often that you can escalate at any time.
There’s different types of friend zoned that I’ve learned about.

It really is the only way to survive it. They WILL come after you though, most anyways. That’s where it gets tricky. That’s why you need to grab your balls and say “look, I want more with you but you’re unable to offer it and I understand. We can be friends but just know friendship is not my first priority and other girls I’m dating will come before you. You cool with that?”

Agreed. He’s not completely out of the race. He’s her C-guy. When other babes show interest, he might be upgraded to her B-guy. If he gets mad social proof, maybe one day he could be her A-guy, but that’s a tall order.
It’s not as hard as you think going from C to A or B to A. The other girl just had to be prettier. You’d be surprised how many girls have friend zoned me thinking I couldn’t do any better, only to blow them out of the water with the next girl who wasn’t about to stick me in the friend zone. I’ve been friend zoned by more average girls than hot girls, it’s weird how it works like that.
