I have a very large interest in movies where a character makes a dramatic metamorphosis from basic loser to superhero. Not like Superman, because he was inherently born with his traits, but with heros that develop or use traits that any mere man has an puts himself in a position of power through effort and application and knowledge.

Perhaps the most realistic (in a sense) and entertaining was of the account of the movie 'The Count of Monte Cristo' and having crossed my mind, I wanted to pose a vision of what to strive. Now, before a broach the topic, don't misconstrue what I say to mean you need a limitless treasure cave ripe with cold bullion. All you need are wits, determination, an open-mind, and the will to succeed.

I offer this up as an image of what the goal, or philsophy, at least my philosophy is on life, on improving, and on becoming a man.

Here, Jim Caviezel starts out as "Edmond Dantes", pure blooded AFC and naive to the core. For those of you "not in the know," he was duped and set up by his friends. A dedicated and fortunate worker, he had but one woman who was his pure prize, as well as the goal of every other man. He had little wits about him, and trusted far too easily in a world of scoundrels. At this point, he was a lowly government worker used as a pawn in game controlled by kings. He lacked skills, common sense, ability, tact, and basic intelligence. Yet...

As the catepillar becomes the butterfly, so too did Dantes morph into The Count of Monte Cristo. Forced as such by the tramatic lock down in the dreeriest of dungeons, Chateau d'If. Worse off, his family was told he was dead, and metaphorically speaking, he was. He lacked the skills to handle himself in the real world, and as such, as the laws of nature have it, sink or swim, do or die, fly or fall, he was forced to adapt or die in the most horrible fashion possible, neglect and isolation.

In the end, though, fortune would shine brightly on our hero, as he would link up with a Priest/Former Thief, who soon enough we discover has stolen the Treasure of Sparta hidden off the coast of an island near to the dungeon. During their period together, the Priest bestows ALL his worldy knowledge upon our hero, Dantes.

You look at this and say "WOW, he goes from misery to the throne." He truly gets it all, only after he lost everything. He was truly inspired, yes for base reasons, but nonetheless inspired. And to action he went. For not all of us will be motivated to action for the same reason, but the end result of character will fulfill the means.

This is where a man should develop from. These are the principles he should adopt. In my opinion, it isn't about what you have, but what you become. For as the oft overused saying goes, you can give a man a fish and feed him for a day, or you can teach a man to fish and feed him for a life time.

The point is to feed men, or boys, or teens, the skills they need to live on their own as independent and honest operating people of society. When you aspire to that, all the rest is EASY. Do you know that 70% of American students 16-22 have NEVER taken a personal finance class? 79%!!!

We take health classes as early as we can comprehend it, or as early as they feel we're ready for it, WHICH IS USUALLY too late. Yet, when it comes to gaining skills of operating in free society, education which pushes us through a system run by the government doesn't provide NECESSARY SKILLS? Skills that might lower abortion, teen pregnancy, drinking, drugs, and a host of other societal problems, what gives?

I advocate through the msg conveyed in my post of adopting a life plan to achieve goals you see now and tweak. Sure, you might change the language you learn, but at least LEARN ONE MORE. And maybe you change your chosen martial art from Aikido to Karate, but be able to protect yourself and your family.

Imagine having these accolades to your name, having all these hobbies to your credit? Would it seem that hard approaching even a 10, if you wanted to? Would you already possess the skills through mere character to envelop here in seduction? I would say, that rather than PIECE meal your approach to seducing women, to attracting them, make it ONE BIG CONCERTED effort. One massive plan. Make something that inspires you and says...

DAMN! I would love to be that guy, then do it! Envision what it would be like to know 2-3 languages, understand fine wines, grasp the markets, talk politics, play an instrument, fix a car, wire a home theater system, build a house, fix a sink, paint a painting, do pottery, and any other miracle you seek to attain. You think a woman would need words or even EFFORT to be attracted to you?

Obviously 'T' levels are low, when you're playing Madden 05 or beating hoes in Vice City, we're not doing much other than flattening our brain waves to that of a cow. This isn't that hard, and as mentioned by the esteemed Dj's Pook and Vesti previously, it gets hard when you apply logic to a situation requiring guts and emotion. Yes, logic should be applied insofar as what steps you devise to become the man you desire, BUT, once you realize and lay out the road, everything you are, do and say will be from who you are and who you're becoming.

So pay heed to the examples laid before us. Hollywood does a terrible job of promoting romance, but an incredible job at inspiring mortals to become heros, and if you look at our forefathers and ancestors, you can see it has been done once before and therefore continues to be done time and time again.

I am inspired

Damn... I am inspired to go out and learn everything I ever wanted to learn. I always wanted to go out and learn polotics, fencing, martial arts, play an instrument, study correctly to get straight A's, and so much other stuff.

I want to go become a legend at baseball and I figured out that I am an idiot because I have not done much practice for awhile(I have become to idle. Time to get my passion back). I had better go practice with my dad.

Also welcome to the boards and a very good post to boot.:) Great to have ya here.

To everyone else have fun

The Count of Monte Cristo is also one of my all time greatest movies! It is awesome, just awesome! A fairy tale, but also a beleivable reality.

Nice post!

I have personally learned all of the things on that list:

*Self-defense
*Business
*Economics
*Language
*Reading
*Math
*Philosophy
*Religion
*Art
*Society & Character

However I dont agree entirely with you. I say to learn many things so you can relate to many people and have meaningful insight in the discussions. However, ever heard of the saying, "jack of all trades, master of none"? This is the reality of it. You should learn a bit about everything, but really master the trade you are passionate about. It is impossible to master all trades!

I am in the process and have mastered to some extent my passions out of that list, which are Economics and Self Defence (if u want to call it that, boxing).

I love the TV movie version from the 70s.

Richard Chamberlain played Dantes in that one.

I just loved his intensity:

"Everyday I learn new words, like Justice, and Vengeance...."
