Okay, so I know that to gain muscle you have to eat some carbs and a whole lot of protein...but what do I do to lose fat?

Besides the obvious: calories in < calories out, and avoid fried foods, exercise etc.

I'm talking about what I should be eating, and what I should be avoiding, and at what times of the day....can anyone help?

Calories in DOES NOT EQUAL Calories out. Try eating the healthiest food you can for a couple weeks. For me this meant not even granola bars because they had too much sugar. Bascially, eggs, oats, potatoes, chicken breast no skin, lean steak, only brown rice, any types of veggies no sauce, fruits in moderation.

This is what I eat:

Morning:
4 egg whites
apple
flaxseed oil
oats

Lunch:
Chicken Breast
Vegetables

Snack:
1 potato
Vegetables

Snack:
Protein Shake with milk

Dinner: Brown Rice, Steak, Salad no sauce

Before bed: Chobani yogurt no fat, 9g sugar, 23g protein kind

hey look man try drinking tea. after moving to japan, and seeing that its the major beverage, and also seeing that the population is only about 0.1% fat ****s, in contrast to my hometown which is roughly 50%, I started doing some research on tea.

its the bomb.

just try drinking green tea. not sugar green tea. green tea and water. check out the stuff for yourself.

Calories in vs Calories out is EVERYTHING and don't let anybody tell you different. As for the content of your food, same deal: Protein.

People make it so much harder than it is and its part of the reason nobody can lose weight. Go to the Bodybuilding.com forums and read the stickies in the Fat Burning section. The clouds will part.

You don't even have to 'avoid fried foods' if everything else fit your goals. If you've gotten enough protein and you'll still be at a calorie deficit, have the side of fries!!

Just make sure you count everything you eat. Buy a food-scale. I used to try and diet without counting my calories and weighing my food . . now it seems like madness. It's like driving blind-folded.

That's right! You can eat candy and sugar and sugar coated candy because all calories are the same! Right?

WRONG.

Here's a nice thread about the calorie debate: http://www.sosuave.net/forum/showthread.php?t=181042

As far as a food scale, that's a good idea when preparing food. BTW, you can make your own granola bars at home. It's easy and you can use better and healthier ingredients. Measure your ingredients and then when you cut it you can easily calculate how much calories and proteins are in there. Pen, paper and max 2 minutes of basic arithmetic.

As far as what you should avoid? Avoid sugar and alcohols and processed foods. So no sweet cakes, soda, beer... etc. Once in awhile won't kill you but try to stick with as natural a food as possible.

Meats, grains, tubers like yams and potatoes, vegetables, fruits... etc. The more weight training you do, the more of your diet should be meat. If you do alot of long distance type activities like running, then more carbohydrates than meats because you need energy to burn.

If it comes in a box, it's not real food. It might be tasty, but it will tear you a new one on the way out.

Candy is high in calories and that is the primary reason people will gain wait eating candy. It also doesn't contain any nutritional value which is terrible for retaining muscle and losing weight the right way. Typically you won't leave yourself enough calories to get the proper food in. But, eat candy and only candy at a calorie deficit and you would still lose weight.

Behold the Twinkie diet:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html

Or, behold my diet. I did the whole "no sugar" "no carbs" thing for years. I didn't count calories. I hit the treadmill 5 days a week and the gym 2-3 times a week. Scale didn't budge. Over the summer I QUIT cardio and only focused on my calorie deficit and my protein.

30 pound loss, cardio free.

The proof is in the low-calorie pudding.

this!

LOL at the same retarded example of "OMG, try eating 1000 calories of sugarz"

no one in their right mind will do that!

calories in vs. calories out (in normal body/musclebuilding diets) is the first and only thing anyone needs to worry about

and unless you're about to step on the stage then screw all the broscience of monosaturated fats/etc and digestion and breakdown of foods/etc

Focus on eating clean food at least 80% of the time.
Example:
Lean beef, poultry, fish especially salmon.
Eggs
Nuts and olive oil
Fruits focusing on berries and vegetables
Whole grain
Dark chocolate at least 70% cocoa

I agree with FortyOx here, this is the simple truth.
There are reasons to avoid sugar, but bottom line if you take in less calories than you burn you will lose weight. It's all math.

The reason eating healthy foods or eating clean works for some people is because those foods are low cal to begin with. People who eat those foods are not likely to take in so many calories that they blimp out. Compared to someone who eats a pack of Oreos a day, that's a lot of calories right there.

Anyone who counts calories is not going to pound down a bunch of Oreos. It's not enough bang for the buck and you'll end up hungry.

Some people do better counting calories and some people do better just trying to eat healthy. Do what works for you.

That doesn't look healthy at all and it isn't a long term solution. But I am looking into it. I need more information like: height, weight before weight after and bodyfat percentages. I have some of it.

Don't know if this was posted or not before, but here was a report on a guy who lost weight eating mainly twinkies...he stayed under the caloric amount he needed to lose weight:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html

Personally, I couldn't do it as I don't like sweets/junk food that much, but I think it can shed some light on the debate.

EDIT: Haha Just saw that someone posted this earlier...
