I got this problem. I wear Gap/American Eagle type of clothes...but i also like Diesel clothes and clothes from Nordstrom...although they are expensive as hell.

My problem is...the only way i know how to match my pants and shirt and occasionally a jacket right is to either follow the Mani can in the store and copy that outfit or try to copy close to it and follow the stylist pick on the website..but if they dont have one im confused on what to match the fade pants with. Im getting a little better with it now but i used to be horrible matching clothes before. For example:

One day ill have on a Bright red Athletics shirt dark blue with yellow fade abercrombie or american eagle jeans...and bright read converse...it looked horrible.

Now to know the clothes would match better if i wore the same shirt or just go with a white T shirt with a dark blue jean with a WHITE fade because the colors have a more sporty look to them so they match better..

Like these jeans: http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?catId=cat90064&productId=0115_2251

and to lose the red chucks and go for some black or white shoes...

as far as the one with the yellow fade..i can match better with a yellow colored shirt or something...get it??

I have all the right gear...spend a good amount of money buying these clothes...but because i dont know how to match it right...it looks horrible.

Im sure there are other dudes on here with the same problem so can i get some help? I know this sounds a little confusing...but for those of you that get it...are there any stylist forums to help with this??....

Yeah, I dress to match. Hat down to my shoes.

Ex: I got a black n gold SF hat, Black n gold shirt, blue jeans, black shoes with gold nike symbol.
Sounds crazy but its dope!! all the women compliment on how I match....

Now, you guys don't have to be that excessive but, it works for me. You could wear a white hat and white-t. Or whatever.

Been a long time since I answered a fashion question, but I know a little.

A general rule is that if you're wearing a belt, it should match your shoes.

If you're wearing dark pants, wear a light colored shirt. If you're wearing light pants, wear a dark colored shirt.

You can almost never go wrong with black work shoes. They are not overly dressy and not overly casual. Plus, they go with almost every outfit.

If you feel the need to wear sneakers and you're going for a less mature look, the general rule is white or black sneakers. The second color should match your shirt. The lace color should match the second color. Your hat should also match your shirt color if you're wearing one.

If you're going to wear sunglasses, make sure they are black. Most sunglasses other then black tend to look overboard.

My casual look: I tend to wear designer jeans, black work shoes, black belt and pretty much any t-shirt works with that look. I tend to wear darker colored shirts (as long as they aren't black or dark blue, because I wear dark pants and this goes against the dark pants/light shirt rule), because I have dark hair. Generally dark browns and dark army greens do the trick. If I end up wearing black with dark pants, I throw on a light colored plaid shirt, unbuttoned. This seems to do the trick.

EDIT: Also, wear clothes that fit you, unless you're going for the rapper look. Don't wear anything too loose or anything way too tight. Too loose if you're skinny, makes you look like a twig. If you're overweight it makes you look poor and can actually make you look fatter. Too tight will make you look either gay or feminized.

Nice man... I also like having a few pairs of different coloured shoes around and coordinating them with my shirts. I just like white or black shoes but I match the secondary colour with my shirt. For example if I was wearing a blue shirt I would wear my white Adidas shoes with matching blue stripes. Then if I wear a hat I match it with the shirt and the secondary shoe colour.

Some people think matching is for gay guys but I think it's great as long as you don't go overboard.

Ken, at least make sure your clothes don't clash, which is usually when you wear two shades of the same colour that are too close to contrast each other, yet too far apart to look the same.

I agree with everything derekeffect said though, his post is a great place to start.

hey man recently in my post I added that I went out shoping with a friend thats a girl now she herself is classy n cool, Ask the coolest girl you know even if you are attracted to her to help you out with a new look.

To make not to needy or creepy just tell her that "hey Im thinking of making changes in my look for this awesome summer , wanna come would gladly appreciate your tasteful advice"
you ask her to come and tell her you 'll come see her buy stuff too and give her your opinion. I honestly dress cool but getting her prespective and seeing them how they react when you try on clothing is undescribable. for me i would read her body language immediately and shed tell me no, no, or umm maybe, " I wouldnt go for any maybe , when she said "yes thats awesome " and see an excitement in her eye like she saw somethin overwhelming its an indication of DUDE GO FOR IT NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

try it and PM back, btw there's a cool book about clothing which is awesome like 20 bucks
and there's a bi monthly magazine for fashion experts I get by mail, but it is most for club clothing and suits.
but Its awesome mag , they match stuff for you. and you can use as reference.

Today I saw Express and H&M store in nyc at 34th street in window and have awesome combinations as well. these stores dont carry my size since I'm 2xl. but their sales pitch is for you to buy and its already combined so its easy for the customer to chose a whole outfit . get it?

feedback appreciated and all of you are invited to read my posts.
Cheers !

A very simple scheme is to match shoes and shirt, and wear some contrasting jeans.

So, if you have blue shoes (good sneakers, chucks, pumas, w/e), you should find a blue shirt and a pair of khakis. It's simple but fresh.

Similarly, if you have blue jeans on, consider a white shirt w/ whitish shoes.

It's all about simple contrasts. You don't need crazy colors, why would you ever try to match red and yellow?

Blues and blacks go together. Browns go with Earth tones like green and maroon. Match shoes to belt, and keep the shoes clean.

Blue shoes? LOL, there's no way I could pull that off. I think the a good rule is that if you're nerdy then you should avoid bright/off color shoes and stick to mostly black or brown colored shoes. hell, even brown colored shoes look stupid on me. I usually have to stick to black.
