I had my answer ready, but I see Gio beat me to it. Oh well.
The modern world has supressed our primal instincts, but they're still there. Sports is probably one of the most salient examples. And of course, sex. We can't get past the urge to procreate, even though the planet is extrememly overpopulated.
Millions of years ago, it benefited the females to seek out the healthiest, strongest males. That remnant of the past is still there, although it's not as necessary to survival as it once was. If for some reason, that need becomes an evolutionary dead-end, it could disappear from future generations of women, but not necessarily, unless it actually becomes a hindrance to the survival of the species. If it does, then the women who go for nerds will become dominant.
Good thing I know my Star Trek trivia. Don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.
