i come here, i work, and when i'm not 1. on here, 2. working, 3. horse racing i'm not on the internet. and I'm so much happier.
This IS a valid point in terms of complicating your life for nothing. It's like we're connected to 10,000 outlets and we really need just one. The trick is to connect to only what you need, and to make a huge effort to engage real life and not get sucked into this virtual world of complaints, horrifying news, selfies, and photos of food from random girls. Why the fück am I looking at a plate of fried chicken on my screen??? Because some twit put it up and you're plugged into their world, that's why.

This is the modern life we all need to fight to keep our human sanity. Goddamn this is a depressing thread.

No matter what you think the catalyst may be for our current modern crisis of hope, for lack of a better term, the fact remains that many people seem disillusioned with the current state of affairs. As some of the posts on this thread would indicate. Myself included. Of course, any change or advance toward happiness or contentment has to come from within. But how can you? Reminds me of something George Carlin said. And I'm paraphrasing: You take Prozac. Why? you're depressed. Really? Well, why not? Look around you. You live in a neon sewer.

Reminds me of something else as well. I don't drink anymore. Been sober for nine years. But something Bukowski said. When you drink, the world still has you by the throat, but the grip isn't as tight. Or something to that effect. Wish I could drink just to take the edge off.

Like I said, things are going to continue down the path we are currently on unless some drastic consequence happens that halts it. Read Heiddegar for more on the post modern condition. We have distanced ourselves so far from what in fact makes us human.

And there is another philosopher whose name escapes me who said that the industrial revolution was the second last turning point for our species. We had a chance to develop our minds after that, to have a cognizant revolution as it were. To become aware of what we, as a species, are capable of, to harness the power of our minds to the effect that we are not ruled by trivialities (capitalism) and desires. No it isn't Eckhart Tolle. But we blew it. We had the chance before we became increasingly technologized. Perhaps someone knows of whom I'm thinking.

Anyway, another nail in the depression.

This is fantastic.

People look at me like a weirdo when I try to articulate this stuff as part of my reason for moving out to the sticks.

...once.

 "Have a safe trip back to the city!"
...and there they stay.

Ah... so I'm NOT crazy for avoiding the spam by turning off my TV, deleting facebook, and dropping out of the workforce.

By the way, backbreaker... I remember Twisted Metal playing with peeps, too. Loved that sh¡t! Hell, I still bust out that goofy laugh of the ice cream truck sometimes. Mr. Frosty was it? Or say "burrrrn iiiin heeeeelllll" like that angry old dude! Awesome recall, dude.

I think I'm going to brush the dust off my pager game! It's purple, blinky, vibrates, tells the time, has an alarm... so much fun! Frickin' stick that bad boy in my pegged Girbauds' leg pocket and rock one of my Public Enemy t-shirts...

Moving out to the sticks.

I did the same thing while I was married. Partly to get away from all the technology and urbanization. A bulwark to protect myself from the inevitable chaos of peak oil. Well, all that's gone now. House and property gone in the divorce like a fart in the wind. Now I live in town.

Ted Kaczinski (the Unabomber, and I'm not advocating his philosophy to anyone nor defending his actions. I'm illustrating a point relevant to our discussion by drawing an example) wrote that the current state of dissatisfaction with the modern world is a direct result of man being distanced from what he termed the "power principle." This simply means that the more man relies on technology and industrialization to accomplish his simple tasks of survival, the more distance he feels from his very nature---i.e. humanity. The result is dissatisfaction, depression and psychosis.

Of course, if it wasn't for the modern world, Ted would not be afforded the opportunity to voice his theories. So, catch 22.

Again, we're all doomed, no matter what. Or, as Bukowski said, "Humanity, we've never had it, from the beginning."

"We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off. "

This is what I hoped would resonate.

I'm doing my best to enjoy the decline, but it's all rather shallow and it gets boring after a while.
