Is it 10 minutes every week or so? Just to keep the tan?
That depends on three things: their equipment, your skin and desired results. Around here, beds are usually either 100W or 160W. After you get a base tan, you're gonna need to go in for about 15 min in a 100W or 10min in a 160W. Standup beds will give you a better, more even tan, but they can cost a bit more.
But before you do that, you have to go in for 2-3 times a week to get that base tan. You're probably looking at anywhere from 1/2 to 2/3 of the time stated above, depending on how easily you burn. They'll usually ask you and recommend something - unless its a really up-scale salon where you know they'll tell you the truth, subtract 20-30% from what they told you and go in for that long.
The rest depends on how dark you wanna get. If you want to get Mr Olympia dark, you're looking at many many hours of tanning. I don't even know how many as i've never gone this far. If you just want a nice darker-than-the-next-guy tan, you can probably hit it after about a total of 80min in 160W or 120min in 100W. Depending on your skin once again. And you're gonna need at least one session a week to maintain it.
Oh and contrary to what the guy above me thinks, any change in the skin's color IS A SIGN OF UV DAMAGE. The cells only change color when damaged by radiation - this is rock-solid science and isn't debatable. A tan does NOT provide it any real protection against UV radiation, that's a myth. Getting a tan and being born black are NOT the same thing - being born black decreases odds of skin cancer 10-fold, and tanning to actually get that dark would increase them 10-fold at least.
Tanning increases the risk of skin cancer, which 1/6 Americans will get by the end of their life, according to ACA. But luckily, 95% of skin cancer cases are curable today. However, it CAN spread to other organs if not treated quickly, and most treatments involve minor surgery and (?sometimes/often?) chemotherapy. So make sure you know the risks before you start tanning. Do your homework. One session a week won't kill you, but if you go in for 4-5, you're asking for it.
