Go to a tanning bed. It'll even out after a while...

Unless you find someone who purchased tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and is letting people use it for free, yes it does cost ;)

If you buy a minute package, i would consider 30-35c/min for 100W bed and twice that for a 160W bed a good deal. Some places will charge FAR more for the same thing - stay away from em.

I'd say that over the course of 8 visits or so, ~100 min in a 160W bed would get you a pretty nice tan. Also, last time i checked, the lotions they sell there are trash - you're probably gonna need to find one yourself if you want results. Check out sunless.com

I'm very white and live in the NW which means very little sun over the winter months. I plan on living a full life and don't wanna risk cancer with tanning bed.

My solution is self-tanners that can be found at just about any market. The only downside is it must be applied 2-3 times a week depends on how dry your skin is.

Not trying to flame you, but...you sound like my mom...

Yes. We all want to live a long life. But, there are certain risks that go along with it. My uncle battled skin cancer for years and ultimately died of Leukemia. He was one of those big corp VP's who plaued golf 3 days a week his whole life. He enjoyed his life in the sun. He died at 83.

You can't live in a bubble. All of us are going to die of something. Cancer, an accident, what ever... Sorry. I get biotched at all the time about my tanning once every 2 weeks...

How often do you need to go to the tanning beds and how often? I've never tried it?

Is it 10 minutes every week or so? Just to keep the tan?

I used to own a tanning salon, and i learned lots about the business.

I don't want to be super dark in the colder months, so i try to maintain that a-little-darker-than-the-average-guy color. For me personally, that just happens to be about two ten-minute sessions in a 20 minute bed per week.

Yes, i've got less tan areas, like between my legs and in my armpits. Just get a self tanner and put it on in those areas, and it will mix pretty damn well.

Tanning isn't as bad as everyone says. The key is MODERATION. Don't go 7 times a week. Also, notice how they always use the EXTREME cases for skin cancer??

"This girl tanned for 20 minutes every day, for 5 years, in her home personal tanning bed, and she got skin cancer...."

Well, NO SH1T!!!

And contrary to popular belief, a tan is NOT a sign of damaged skin. It's your body's natural defense mechanism to sunlight/ultra-violet light. So, with that in mind, would black people, or mexicans be covered in damaged skin? NO.

That depends on three things: their equipment, your skin and desired results. Around here, beds are usually either 100W or 160W. After you get a base tan, you're gonna need to go in for about 15 min in a 100W or 10min in a 160W. Standup beds will give you a better, more even tan, but they can cost a bit more.

But before you do that, you have to go in for 2-3 times a week to get that base tan. You're probably looking at anywhere from 1/2 to 2/3 of the time stated above, depending on how easily you burn. They'll usually ask you and recommend something - unless its a really up-scale salon where you know they'll tell you the truth, subtract 20-30% from what they told you and go in for that long.

The rest depends on how dark you wanna get. If you want to get Mr Olympia dark, you're looking at many many hours of tanning. I don't even know how many as i've never gone this far. If you just want a nice darker-than-the-next-guy tan, you can probably hit it after about a total of 80min in 160W or 120min in 100W. Depending on your skin once again. And you're gonna need at least one session a week to maintain it.

Oh and contrary to what the guy above me thinks, any change in the skin's color IS A SIGN OF UV DAMAGE. The cells only change color when damaged by radiation - this is rock-solid science and isn't debatable. A tan does NOT provide it any real protection against UV radiation, that's a myth. Getting a tan and being born black are NOT the same thing - being born black decreases odds of skin cancer 10-fold, and tanning to actually get that dark would increase them 10-fold at least.

Tanning increases the risk of skin cancer, which 1/6 Americans will get by the end of their life, according to ACA. But luckily, 95% of skin cancer cases are curable today. However, it CAN spread to other organs if not treated quickly, and most treatments involve minor surgery and (?sometimes/often?) chemotherapy. So make sure you know the risks before you start tanning. Do your homework. One session a week won't kill you, but if you go in for 4-5, you're asking for it.

It's interesting that the Food and Drug Administration's website has an article on the effects of sun-exposed skin, and they support what Krassus says, (about a tan being damaged skin) then the next sentence they support what i say:

"In fact, any tan is a sign of adaptation of the skin to potentially damaging UVR. Tanning occurs when the skin produces additional coloring (pigment) to protect itself against sunburn. "

My question is still this: HOWCOME being born black decreases your chances for skin cancer ten-fold? WHAT is protecting them from the harmful rays of the sun?

I'm not master of all tanning, but i heard a doctor saying that when the skin cells are stimulated by ultraviolet light, as they become more tan, they are sprouting a canopy, much like the canopy's trees create in the forest, so that the harmful rays don't get further into the skin. The more tan (melanin?), the more protection is being offered. So, maybe blacks have more melanin canopy-things to protect their lower layers of skin???
Oh, and when you burn, your skin cells didn't have enough time to slowly form this canopy, and the UV light penetrated to the lower layers.

Hell, i don't know. I don't care much either, cause i know from personal results that tanning isn't very good for my body. I should probably stop. :)

Technically, having a good tan makes your skin less susceptible to UV radiation. But the protection it provides is very insignificant. Not to mention that in order to get a good tan, the amount of UV your skin would have to absord would probably be equal to about as much as your regular pale person absorbes in a few years.

Special Shorts

There are special tanning shorts that have micropores to allow sunlight to pass through them and tan you. They are moderately expensive and NOT see through. However, if you want to tan fast you want to apply tanning lotion and any man who applies tanning lotion on the beach under his shorts looks like he is using lotion to wax his d!ck to the local eye-candy, so beware.

DON'T DO TANNING BENCHES

TANNING BENCHES HAVE 400% HIGHER RATES OF UV RADIATION AND ARE LINKED TO GREATER CHANCES FOR CANCER. DON'T GO TO TANNING MACHINES!
