My crystal ball:

This recession will last a decade, possibly longer. In the meantime, the middle class will be wiped out and a permanent unemployed/underemployed class will grow and grow. A good comparison is the Roman Republic, which had a large strong citizen class (the farmer/soldier) to the Roman Empire, which had a large destitute class dependent on the grain dole and a professional army.

Guess where we're at...

Gold is shiny metal and money is green paper. The strongest asset is your mind. I bought a bunch of REITS in 2008 and they have tripled in value while paying me a substantial dividend. My only regret is that I had bought more.

Buy when there's blood in the streets.

Huh, I could of told you what wasn't going to happen 2 years ago. It is sort of like sports analysis. At the end of the day, what actually happens can't be fully predicted by analyists, but by the players on the field.

Consider China. Many think China is the next superpower, growing fast, buying bonds from all over the place like a drunken sailor.

But their one child policy, started in the seventies, is going to absolutely destroy them in 50 years or so. Their age demographic is going to be so upside down, and they aren't all that efficient to begin with. So their growing economy is likely going to pop. And when it pops, it's gonna be a doozy.
Not only that, but they have such a LARGE, and I mean fvcking LARGE discrepancy in the ratio of men/women. Not to mention that the U.S will have one of the youngest work forces in the world in a few years, where as China will experience and aged and old workforce. Everyone has their problems, some are worse off than others. For everyone saying the U.S is going to implode, just move already.

Or at least grab your gun, start a militia, and join in the REVOLUTION!!!!!!! SONS OF PATRIOTS!!!!!!! DAMN THE IMPERIALIST DOGS!!!!!!!!

I think the U.S. will remain the only superpower in the 21st century.

Like taiyuu said, china ****ed themselves with their one child policy and their cultural bias towards having male children (killing female babies)

It's only a matter of time before india and pakistan destroy each other with nuclear fire.

Germany is the only country in the EU that has their sh*t together. Nuff said.

OK well Russia's economy collapsed when it was a super power, and granted it isn't a super power today, it is still a power. So do you think that America will dissolve into anarchy instantly? Maybe a revolution and a new change of government with lots of people dying, but I think these Mad Max scenarios are absurd. Unless China or Russia decides to invade us at the same time I don't think we would be screwed. Of course the power vacuum will allow another country or group of countries to fill in, but the question is who?

Throughout human history, every person who ever lived held the belief that the world would end in their lifetime. There's nothing new about "the sky is falling, the sky is falling!" And they've always had plenty of rational and sensible reasons (in their time) for why the world would end.

All the crap we worry about today is economic...guess what economies fluctuate. Had you lived during the days of WWII, what would you have said then? OH MY GOD THE NAZIS ARE GOING TO CONQUER THE WORLD, WE'RE ALL DEAD!

I think people are fascinated by the "end of days" because they are losers and want the "big bad unfair world" to go away, or they are just depressed and bored with life, and such widespread change excites them.

Pay attention to the fact that these people have ALWAYS been wrong. Despite their thinly-veiled crybaby desires for the big unfair world to end, we are still here and the sun still comes up every morning. Are you to join their ranks, or are you gonna get busy LIVING and not have any time for losers who want an excuse to throw in the towel?

Oh, and America is now and forever the greatest country on earth, we're in a downcycle now but that doesn't mean throw in the towel! You're a weak pvssy if you do.

the new world order is coming, America will become a third world military dictatorship. Are you ready?
Everyone knows the army and your "elected" representatives are sold to the highest bidder.

You should be more worried about the corporations and the upper "class" fleecing everyone than the military imposing anything. The military doesn't give a f*ck as long as they have something to do, and they have plenty for years to come with two wars.

The world might not end, but economies have been known to self-destruct. Look at Greece, Iceland and Argentina.

With the dissapearance of the middle class and upper management making more than ever in history, the country doesn't have a chance. The pay gap is MASSIVE with CEOs and their cronies making hundreds of times more than the average worker in their companies.

Add that exporting jobs to China and you have the makings of another and more brutal economic crisis. How can people make money if they don't have jobs anymore? What will the economy run off? Funny money? That doesn't work as you've seen.

It's all going down. That's why I'm heavily stocked with water and freeze-dried food. Anyone who comes through my door is getting blown away.

All ponzi schemes end quickly and badly. It's just a matter of time at this point.

The whole 'system' is one corrupt ponzi scheme.

The good news is who needs it anyway? You can do just fine if you don't have your head in the sand.

I say let it all collapse, it's been long overdue anyway.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

For those that are interested, here's a good contrarian view to the "coming collapse"

Rational Optimist
That's nice and all, but things aren't going to go round and round if the money doesn't flow. What makes capitalism work is the ability to make your own choices with your money as an individual and as a business. Can't do that if you're getting fleeced. Can't have an economic system if money doesn't flow.

The top 1% hoard all the money, and that will be the downfall of the country if the trend continues. Look at Dubai. You have the filthy (and I mean vomit inducing) rich, and you have the indebted "workers". There's no middle class, people don't have choices. The country is a joke, and let's not get into Dubai's "economy". Economy from what?

It's good for everyone. If the system doesn't work, then we'll find a new one. If corporations need the nation's blood to even exist, there's something very very wrong.

that's pretty much the intent of the book behind the link I posted. The author details about 5000 years of human history, with societies coming together, building economies, going bust, and then being recreated, each time better.

One theme that shows itself over and over is societies are built on and flourish from trade, but are destroyed, time and time again, by chiefs (governments) and priests (religions).

Not outright militant style slaughter, but the metaphorical killing of the golden goose, over and over again, through increasingly excessive regulations and laws.

That looks like a good book taiyuu. I wonder if he talks about how governments keep growing and growing until they get too big and corrupted, it can't be sustained anymore.

I read we've crossed a point where there's more folks working for the government, than in private construction. That just can't be good.

I'm with Mark Farber when he says "50% of government should be sacked".

We need a small effecient government that just stays out of the way...

Do not be too easy. If you are too easy to get, she will not want you. If you are too easy to keep, she will lose interest in you. If you are too easy to control, she will not respect you.

Are you saying my prediction was incorrect? The whole global financial system almost collapsed in 2008 had it not been for the massive stimulus efforts by the Fed and Treasury Dept. We're still at risk for a double-dip and thats no conspiracy theory...

liberals are rabid like little hairless huskies with AIDS. Anyways unless you are for illegal immigration or that mosque in ground zero, you are labeled a bigot, ignorant, wacko, or racist. C'mon guys you really get your panties in a bundle about everything.

The truth is the US is being hurt by its pvssy-a.ss stance on those two above issues and its inability to invest in education and create more jobs domestically.

You're simplifying it too much. It's not liberalism or conservatism, it's living in LALA Land and lots of people do it.

Anyways unless you are for illegal immigration or that mosque in ground zero, you are labeled a bigot, ignorant, wacko, or racist. C'mon guys you really get your panties in a bundle about everything.
Well, the mosque at ground zero isn't actually at ground zero. It's several blocks away. Also, these people are obeying the law like every other developer. Also, it's not a mosque but a large community center with a chapel inside.

Stop watching Faux News.

Jobs are created out of demand. If you put the demand on China to make chemical tainted cheap sh*t, then that's what you get.

It's as much the fault of business and government as it is the fault of consumers who are only interested in buying the cheapest possible product.
