Eating to Bulk Up in College

To all of you college students:

I'm a college freshman, six feet tall and 150 pounds. I want to bulk up to about 180, but I'm not sure how I can possibly eat enough.

Like most students, I guess, I have a 2-meal a day meal plan and not much money to eat off campus. Next semester, I'll switch to a 3 meal a day plan, but eating the recommended six meals would be impossible for me. I want to get some good "snack" food to keep in the dorm and eat in between meals and on the way to class.

What would you recommend? The college forbids most appliances except a refrigerator and microwave. I have a good appetite (I'm pretty much always hungry), I just cannot eat enough in one sitting at the dining hall, and this is really hurting my diet. Thanks for any help.

*Fellow student advice*

Look for a cheap food store around and get thier discount card too.

Go cheap. Sandwhiches are good (Bread: 89 cents, 3 packs of sliced turkey: $50 each), ground turkey (cheaper, healthier, and actually better tasting than ground beef,) some soups (Campbells just had a special: 10 for $2). Peanuts are good for snacking on the way to class (get the giant bottle of them. Cheap and lasts a long time.) Milk is good too.

Look around, shop smart, lift strong, and eat right.

Make your own MRP shakes and bring along to drink when you have time. Or a couple of packets of cottage cheese to eat.

Otherwise there is a good recipe for protein bars by wardog on bodybuilding.com...

great tasting recipe, bring a couple of bars along and eat when you feel the need.

2 meals just won't cut it, you'll probably need around 2500 calories and 1250 calori meal is... well... you'll never get it down.

Also check this thread for ideas.

With your situation, I'd imagine that home-made weight-gainer milkshakes would be the way to go. For my protien shakes, I use a cup of skim milk, a cup of fat-free yogurt, and a scoop of whey protien. Obviously, this isn't exactly a weight-gaining milkshake, but it is very healthy as it has 270 calories, 38 grams of protien, 27 carbs, and 1 gram of fat.

Peanut butter sandwiches. 400 quality calories per sandwich. I eat 3 a day, plus my 3 meals. Also, it's really easy to sneak in the cafeteria or put food in a backpack. Good luck man.

Good idea. There are lots of ways to steal stuff from the all you can eat style dining halls.

1) They always have fruits you can slide in your backpack.
2) Buy some tupper ware or glad ware and load up.
3) At my college they had grap bags of potato chips for the taking.
4) If they have sandwitches/subs they might wrap them up for you.
5) Stay in the dinning hall for a couple of hours to study or whatever and just grase as you please.
6) Steal napkins instead of buying paper towles.
7) Take used beverage bottles and fill them up.

Oh and even if you don't need to stealing is fun! :)

If your caf is a buffet kind of a thing where you can go back as much as you want...go there with your back pack and some kind of container in it.

Then eat until your full, then go back and get a whole tray of food with a lot of protein rich foods, and potatoes if they have them.

Put all the food in the container in your back pack then wait a little and go back and do the same thing. If you do this about twice a week in addition to buying a whey protein and weight gainer for back up, you'll have enough food stored to have six meals a day that'll meet your calorie requirement.

I'm in a similar situation.. but with work.

I plan on eatting 6 meals a day, every 3 hours or whatever.

I get two breaks and a lunch, so basically it works out in terms of that.

But, my whole plan was just to pack tuna sandwiches, or make the food in advance and bring them to work.

Something that works so well for me is a TUNA TUB

Fill a tub with:

2 cans of tuna
200-300g uncooked weight of pasta
Sweetcorn
Mayonaise to flavour

Provides around 1200-1500 calories and is very portable.
Just remember to carry a lot of mouthwash with you!!!

Yeah it is possible. Those 6 meals dont necessarily have to be "real" meals. I for example get up eat some cornflakes (meal 1) later during the day I eat 2 slices of bread with skimm cottage-chesse on them (2) then Ill eat a couple of small cups of yogurts (low-fat) while im watching tv for a couple of minutes or listen to music. Then in the evening I eat a "real" meal like chicken breast with rice, or a pizza, or a big plate of spaghetti. (4). Then Ill eat another 2 slices of bread or whateva and so on....I dont really spend much time on preparing meals, just once a day really the rest of my meals consists of things u can put together in a matter of seconds. Try it out it works ;-)
