wow i lost my post great, anyway to sum it up cuz im not retyping the whole thing:

Im just wondering what is the point of getting a gym membership when i can just buy a set of changeable dumbbells to use. My main priority is my pecs, back, and shoulders, but I would rather use the dumbbells only if its possible, even tho less efficient, and avoid forking out all the money for a gym membership. How much less efficient are dumbell workouts to gym workouts in creating results in the pecs/back/shoulders. Thank in advance for this will be the deciding factor on how i approach my working out.

Barbell = deadlifts (best exercise for back of all, probably the best exercise of all in general), db rows don't really cut it in comparison ..

I love my DB bent over rows.

I'm assuming you mean standing DB rows?

If not, how many types of rows are there (everyone seemt to use different terms for the same things), and what would you suggest in DB bent overs?

What is your opinion of seated cable rows?

So far I do DB bent over rows, lat pulldown, chins and deadlifts. Getting great results.

Why do seated cable rows if you can deadlifts or barbell rows?

Dumbbell rows are okay, but more weight = more size, so I'd prefer the barbell so I can lift more.

Unless you mean of course, 2-handed db rows.. in which case, then right on!

Cheers mate, i'm assuming by both dumbell and barbell rows you mean

http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidLateral/DBUprightRow.html

and

http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidLateral/BBUprightRow.html

respectively? In which case i'll drop the one arm DB bent over rows for.

I asked about the cable rows as I had some "guru" tell me today that I should do them to increase mass in the middle of my back, instead of deadlifts, one arm rows etc.

I've had good results with the one arm DB bent over rows, but if these are deemed better ill give em a crack.

No no no mate, those are upright rows for your shoulders, and a very dangerous exercise by all accounts - stay away from it.

http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/BackGeneral/BBBentOverRow.html is what I mean; the guy's form is crappy however, you shouldn't move your hips or knees when rowing, and I also think he's using his arms more than his lats..

Either way, that's what I meant!

Known as barbell row or bent over barbell row.

Remember, your size is ALWAYS going to be limited by your weight.

If your maximum available weight is a 50kg bar, then you could do whatever the hell you want with it, squat, deadlift, military press, superset, giantset, dropset.. you won't get any bigger once you've mastered those 50kg.
