This is something that has been happening for the past year. I go out maybe 2-3 times a month, and usually half of the time, I get very sick afterwards. I have tried to go from whiskey and cokes, to safer flavored vodkas and sodas, to adding grenadine so I don't taste the alcohol. I have restricted myself to 3 drinks max, and even THAT made me sick this past weekend. Once I got sick off of ONE rum and coke, but I blamed that on the birth control I was on at the time.

What is going on here!?

For what it is worth, I am a girl, and I am barely 5'1, 100lbs soaking wet. Having said that, I used to be able to go out and binge drink with the best of them on the weekends without nary a hangover thanks to alcoholics in my heritage line. I have never had a weak stomach. Have I developed an allergy? Or am I just getting old? What is the deal? I hate going out and being around drunk people while sober, so I have stopped going out, which is no fun.

Need to figure it out!

You may have developed an intolerance to certain types of alcohol.

It happened to an old drinking buddy of mine. In a matter of weeks he deteriorated from drinking us all under the table to becoming violently ill. One time he threw up blood after a few beers. He went to the doctor the next day and did a bunch of tests. They couldn't find anything. A second opinion also turned up zilch.

Then he went to a specialist and they did a bunch of allergy tests. Turns out he had developed serious allergies to gluten, which is in pretty much any alcoholic drink (except wine.. does that mess you up too?) Poor guy can't eat bread, pasta or anything with wheat in it either. Dairy is also off-limits. Sucks to be him!

You should talk to a dietician, or just get some standard allergy tests done at your doctor's. Your symptoms sound very similar to his.

That is really odd, because the exact same thing has happened to me. Started to happen about 6 months ago. Before I could drink twice a week if needed, basically whatever I wanted, and was fine. Then I started to get this sickly feeling in my stomach after I drank. A few weeks ago I had about 5 drinks and felt like puking all the next day. Now its to the point where even 1-2 drinks and I start to get sick while I'm drinking, and get really tired. Have no idea what is going on. Have gone from mixed drinks like rum and cokes to beer, and its still there. I have thought about going to the Doctor to see if I am allergic now or something. Even thinking of having a drink right now and I start to feel sick. You can't imagine my surprise when I saw you post the exact same thing I have been experiencing. Feel great any other time btw.

Maybe your body/liver got tired of the abuse and is sending you a message to cut that **** out.

Iqqi, hard to say exactly why it changed, but to be fair 3 drinks on somebody your size would get your BAC high enough that puking is not unheard of, if you drink them close together and on an empty stomach.

Also, are you mixing these yourself or drinking at clubs/bars/parties?

For me I've found that quality of alcohol does play a factor. Some cheap crap can make me sick, feel like **** all next day, and that's without even getting particularly drunk.

Another thing is, are you SURE your tolerance was higher before?

I use to frequent this ****ty club when I first started going out, and it seemed like I could drink a LOT, as in 6-10 drinks would get me to a good spot, not wasted. Mind you I'm fairly slim, so that is a lot for somebody that is not a heavy drinker. Then, I went to a nicer place, and ordered roughly the same number of drinks, and got beyond wasted. Turns out, the first place was watering their **** down at least in half.

yeah, it is just crazy and out of nowhere!

I don't think it is gluten, guys, because I don't have any problems with pasta or bread or any food. Only alcohol. I haven't been drinking wine much lately. Although the first time I ever got really sick after drinking was one out of the blue instance three years ago, after I had three glasses of white vino the night before.

Maybe I will stick to a white wine next time I go out, but wines aren't always common at some of the clubs and dives I find myself at when I do go out these days. And if they have it, it's the cheap stuff and I instantly get a headache! :(

Interesting to hear it has happened to you, cordon, because you are the exact opposite of my body composition!

It sure does suck. I love ****tails.

I have had a summer or two when I went out drinking every weekend, but that's only been maybe two summers out of my life. I'd say from age 25-28 I had a few seasons that I went out often, and some of those times I drank a **** ton. But nothing like what people usually do, being binge drunks from age 18 til forever. And yeah, my tolerance was nice and high. It's not like I'd only go to one place, anywhere I went, from iqqiville to Vegas, I could drink a lot.

I don't drink fast, I tend to nurse drinks. And I usually eat before I go out, so it isn't the empty stomach.

I do think it could be possible that the brands are terrible, so if there is a particular brand that is known for being very smooth and stable on the stomach, I am all ears. But keep in mind I used to be a whiskey or rum drinker, and have went all the way to plain vodka, and it all makes me sick. As a matter of fact, hand crafted ****tails are all the rage in the city I am in now, with great quality ingredients and liquor, and last month one of the sickest days I experienced was after three very fine ****tails and a sip of super expensive whiskey. I thought I was going to die the next day, threw up for 12 hours nonstop. I don't drink beer.

I think it's your gall bladder. Next will come difficulty digesting fat. The gall bladder and liver are very close to each other, which is why digestion of alcohol is typically the first problem.

Doctors can test your gall bladder and give you a % that it is functioning. Anything below 30% and they take it out. It's an out-patient surgery that is no big deal, provided of course that you have health insurance.

As a rowdy student party animal who enjoys binge drinking 3 times a week, throwing up is a blessing in disguise to avoid hangovers.

But as you only drink 3 drinks max, this clearly does not apply to you.

I am noticing a general intolerance to drinking, especially very hoppy drinks including IPAs. The hangovers are bad even if I don't drink as much when compared to hard drinks. Said drinks wreck my lower GI system too.

Part of it might be age as we all tend to weaken in most regards. Perhaps before, we didn't notice the effects as much as now. Much like a kid can bounce back from an athletic injury that much more, the body loses this functionality internally too.

Look at people who develop lactose intolerance, allergies, or even diabetes at an older age.

Stop drinking, or get one of those machines that let's you inhale the vapors. I can still drink like a fish and black out with the best of them. But these days I take 5 day intervals.

stop drinking TO GET DRUNK!

When I go out I drink to kill my thirst or loosen up a little. I treat beer like I treat soda. I drink a glass of soda to kill my thirst and I drink a glass of beer to do the same. I'm not out to drink 6-7 beers I don't care about impressing nobody.

The problem is that young people now a days drink to get drunk and impress friends (and end up puking all over themselves at the end of the night). Like I said treat beer like you treat soda. Do you drink a whole 2 litter bottle worth of coke? Of course not! Yet some people try to do that with alcohol it seems.

^^^ I don't know if you read the post, but I drink a max of 3 ****tails a night. This is the span of the night... not like within an hour. When I do want to get drunk, maybe one more, and yes, sometimes it is a lot of fun to get drunk and dance the night away with other drunk people. I actually have always hated the taste of alcohol, but I like what it does. ;)

That is the issue. Every once in awhile, I'd like to be able to get a nice buzz on, or even get plain DRUNK (not wasted, I've never come close to drinking so much someone had to worry about whether I had alcohol poisoning or anything). And I seem to get sick when I do. :(

Thanks everyone for your theories, I am going to try a few of them when I get the courage to go out and drink again. When health care is free in 2012, I'll go see a doctor. :D

iqqi, I know you know your alcohol, so my first question was going to be: Type of alcohol?

But then I saw you wrote "Rum and coke" was getting you sick. Whenever I saw this happen in the past, it'd be because of the low quality stuff that people would drink. Instead of Grey Goose or Belvedere or Van Gogh, they were drinking Svedka or Nadja, because it was "cheaper". But I doubt this is the case here.

The other thing could be that it's because you DON'T binge as much anymore. If you let up after a LONG while, your body can "detox" and not get used to the cycle anymore.

Personally, I've had this happen a few times.
I say that if you know you are getting sick by Drink #3, you might want to stop at #2 and just enjoy the finest of the fine ****tails instead.

Other than that, it might be medical.
Just be glad it's a response to alcohol and not chocolate. I'd hate to get sick over chocolate.
