Yeah and the worst part is at a busy bar you're not really directly tipping for good service when you do tip because it goes in a shared tip bucket. If you tip your bartender well the person might still, but not always, serve you quicker, but a lot of times it's so busy you have get a different bartender to get a drink. The servers are making plenty of money and sharing the tip pot anyway so you get little in return for big tipping.
In general, if there is one bar with shared bartenders, they have their sides they take care of. Your best bet at a big bar is to stick to one side of the bar to get your drinks with the same bartender, because as others have mentioned, they remember you when you tip. Your service time will improve, and you never know what may happen. When I was on Spring Break in Panama City Beach back in the day, I tipped the guy $5 on my first round of 5 drinks for me and my friends, and he gave me the next four drinks free! I continued to tip and I got 1 or 2 more later in the night. That's how you know that you're around a bunch of cheapos, when the bartender loves you for a tip.

If you continually tip well, any smart bar will give you a free drink here or there as appreciation.

At the bar, I tip $1 first before I'm served. This way she is more likely to serve you more than what you're actually paying for.

If it's a place you frequent, then it's always cheaper in the long run to tip well.

I always tip, regardless. It's a sign of class. Usually $1 for a $5 shot, more if the drink is more. It doesn't matter who the bartender is. But sometimes I actually get surprised looks from bartenders when I tip them, I guess because I live in a college town and most students are cheap-asses who don't tip.

Reservoir Dogs quotes

Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: Nah, I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make sh1t.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money that she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a fukking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight - you don't ever tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something, a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, our girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. She wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your d1ck?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

Mr. Pink: Look, I ordered coffee. Now we've been here a long fukking time and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled six times.
Mr. Blonde: Six times. Well, what if she's too fukking busy?
Mr. Pink: The words "too fukking busy" shouldn't be in a waitress's vocabulary.
Nice Guy Eddie: Excuse me, Mr. Pink, but I think the last fukking thing you need is another cup of coffee.

Mr. Pink: I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fukked up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fukks in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it. Put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bull**** I got two words for that -learn to fukking type. 'Cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fukking surprise.
Im working in a hotel, so i know tips are important. I do appreciate when the guests are tipping me so Im just doing what others would do for me. I always tip if the service is good and I enjoyed the moment. In US, its a kind of "rules" to tip, isnt it ?

cheers

Always tip the bartender. Doesn't matter whether you are coming back or not. Personally I tip one dollar for every 2 beers and throw in an extra dollar when I leave if the service was good. I make it a point never to drink mixed drinks in a bar, because it never gets made like I want anyways and it sucks trying to bribe a good drink out of the bartender. And some of the places I drink, I would fear for getting slipped a mickey. I don't drink in crowded bars/clubs either so I don't worry about the barkeep remembering me. They are probably standing there talking to me the whole time. And I always pay cash. But that's just me :)

I know a lot of you probably won't agree with me. As far as bartenders I don't tip very much. If its like a 2.75 drink I'll just give 3, stuff like that. I figure for as hard as I have to work for a dollar, taking 3 seconds to pour me a beer doesn't warrant a dollar. When I work at my job, I don't get tips but I work damn hard. They are doing what they are paid to do. Why should they be rewarded so much just for doing what they are supposed to be doing. Its like saying "I can't believe it, you ACTUALLY DID YOUR JOB, WOW!!!" heres a tip. I don't care if they don't make alot, they should of completed school. Its their fault they work a dead-end job.

Its a self fulfilling problem. People take service jobs because they expect to make good tips. Because of tips, employers feel they can pay crap wages because the workers make up for it in tips. Because the employers pay crap wages, people feel they should tip to help the employees out. And so on.

However I agree that the 'don't get paid enough' excuse is BS. Nobody is making you work that crappy job, get a higher paying one if you don't like it. Hell if the pay is so bad without tips, then if we didn't tip, fewer people would work service jobs, demand would increase, pay would increase, and there you go.

I usually tip a dollar per drink at the bar to get better service, but to be honest I don't like the practice one bit.

Its usually the people that don't tip that we remember the most so that the next time you come in, we'll give the kitchen staff the cue to "modify" your order just a little.
I've worked food service and no matter how bad the customer, it's NEVER right to "modify" someone's food, nasty little piggies.

You deserve to get hepatitis the next time you dine out.

I tip for water. But that's just when I'm feeling generous.
